Has anyone else read this? I just read it, intrigued but not tbh expecting much, and found it very compelling.

Yes, the narrative voice gets a bit lost (v hard to write from 5 year old perspective for whole novel I think) and I was cross at the end, but it was very powerful and moving, I thought. Not least because it made me realize that children don't necessarily need/want what we want them to, or think they do.

I loved this book so much. Jack reminded me of ds1so I found it difficult to read in parts. Overall I found it an utterly compelling read.

Found this an interesting read but I was a ultimately disappointed, probably due to hearing so much about it. I didn't think it was all that remarkable. Also found it generally uncomfortable. I didn't feel I came away with anything added from the reading.

The use of the child's voice (which was OK but not that great - I have a 5 yr-old) led to a simplicity which prevented any added depth to anything - nothing new.

I thought it was a great effort, but I'm glad it didn't win the Booker.

Squeegle - me too. I had to turn to the back, as I didn't want to read on if it ended tragically. I have never done that with a book previously.

Agree with your review of this book. The mother-child bond and the theme of sacrifice was well told, but the escape just didn't sit right with me. I wondered if it had been written in a hurry, to beat any other competition, what with the awful stories (Fritzl etc) in the news...

Just finished this last night.
I enjoyed it. It moved quickly enough for me and I loved the escape.
I agree that after the escape things didn't sit right and jack's language was inconsisent.
I like little things like, 'pop' is something adults say to make things sound fun that arent.

but where did old nick go? what was his motive? why?
i would have liked to have read from Ma's perspective also.
