Anyone know what this book is?

I was in WH Smith today and was looking at the Booker Prize Nominees, there was a book that was interesting (paperback, which now makes me wonder if it was one of the nominees or just a book that was out of it's place). What I remember of the blurb it was some kind of thriller/mystery about a three year old girl, dressed as an angel, that is killed, initially it was presumed that it was a hit and run as it was halloween but more transpires.

The book's title was only two words, that I thought I would remember. I have tried searching for the nominees on the web but have not seen the book. Pretty sure the author was male and there was a comment on the front of the book from The Irish Times (?), so perhaps an irish author.

I know it's a long shot but I would really appreciate it if anyone knows the title as I would like to look at the reviews on Amazon, see if I can gather a bit more info about the book and then put it on my Wish List.

No idea, but I like the sound of "Never let me go" and the Ian McEwan one

You're gonna cost me a fortune!!! Methinks its books for chrsitmas

MrsSpoon · 05/10/2005 16:11

YG, it's not there which makes me think it was possibly in the wrong place, although I do seem to remember there being a sticker on the front of it saying something about the Booker Prize. Thinking it was something "Soul" but struggling to find it.

And The Accidental....

TheRtHonBaronessEnidOBE · 05/10/2005 16:15

doesnt sound like a booker (she says slightly sniffily)

soudns like one of those dreadful nicci jones type thrillery things

suzywong · 05/10/2005 16:19

Never Let Me Go is Ishiguro (sp)

it's slow but very very moving

TheRtHonBaronessEnidOBE · 05/10/2005 16:19

was it Case Histories by Kate atkinson?

suzywong · 05/10/2005 16:23

no it's not that, the girl little girl disappears from a tent in the garden, I don't think she's dressed as an angel and it wasn't halloween

MrsSpoon · 05/10/2005 16:23

Well that's what surprised me, it didn't sound very Booker (I usually quite like the Booker nominees), wondered if it was a better class of thriller type thing, something along the lines of Donna Tartt maybe. Wanted to investigate.

It not Never Let Me Go or Case Histories. I'm really annoyed at myself now, was sure I could remember the name, have spent the last half hour searching the net to no avail.

The little girl dressed as an angel and halloween are definately right, IIRC from the blurb it looked like a hit and run but something more sinister transpires.

I give up, just gone totally cross-eyed searching WH Smith's website.

NotQuiteCockney · 05/10/2005 17:21

Lost Souls? It's here .

NotQuiteCockney · 05/10/2005 17:22

Oh, that's it for sure, she's dressed as an angel and everything.

flamebat · 05/10/2005 17:50

And the booker prize link "his first novel, The Keepers of Truth, shortlisted for the Booker Prize."

MrsSpoon · 05/10/2005 23:13

You are an absolute star NQC!!! Thank you, thank you! Can't believe you found it!

I searched for "Lost Soul" on a number of book sites and didn't get that book up at all.

You are a genius!

Off to have a better look at the reviews and decide whether to buy it.

Thanks again.

The reviews on the UK Amazon site are much more positive than the .com site so have taken the plunge and ordered the book. Thanks again.

Just goes to show how important that last "s" was.

Mrs Spoon - all I did was google for a bunch of words from your description: I think it was "murder irish halloween book girl".

Yeah, just checked, that brought it up.

Glad to hear you've got it sorted, anyway.

MrsSpoon · 06/10/2005 21:48

Doh, I didn't try that, I did try to "Ask Jeeves" but he was pants.
