Kindle user help and ideas

BlingLoving · 02/01/2011 10:47

Just reading another kindle thread and spotted a few references to things others do with their kindles so thought a single thread to share tips and ideas would be helpful.

Two on that thread I spotted: someone said she wad mimsnetting from kindle. How? I can't find it. Someone else said there is now a function to allow you to lend your books to other kindle users. How?

I would also like to know if anyone has tops on how to access my kindle page via my iPhone. Currently, I can only seem to access basic info so if for example I have sent a book to my kindle and now want to send it to me iPhone, I have to use a proper computer.

I have that lighted cover too, but in pink. I think it's lovely although I was also shocked at the price I decided to get it anyway as hopefully it will last.

BuzzLightBeer · 05/01/2011 18:56

Blush

ClaireDeLoon · 06/01/2011 15:41

Apple green a popular colour it seems - me too!

BlingLoving · 06/01/2011 16:01

Yes - I can't figure out minesweeper either. Am I an idiot?

I got my lovely Kindle for xmas and I love love it.
Have just read this thread re minesweeper so had a look and there it is plus another game but I cant work it out either ...

MNHQ PLEASE add a Kindle topic so the Kindle nerds can point out the obvious share!

silverfrog · 06/01/2011 18:43

have you played minesweeper on your PC before? (sorry, possibly a silly quesiton!)

if not, it will be way easier to figure it out on your PC than on the kindle.

if you have, then use the directional button to move through the grid, and mark it as you wish - intructions at the top of the screen.

the second game is like a very big noughts and crosses. you need to get 5 in a row. you are X, kindle is O. again, use the directional button to move the highlighted square, and ok it when ithighlights where you want ot make a move.

I got the lighted cover in orange (just to buck the trend). I really like it. The light is plenty bright enough but there is a bit more lightspill than DH would really like (he sleeps on the left hand side). I am completely loving my Kindle so far and have loaded it up with all kinds of things. It's beautiful and so easy to use. The single thing I have found that I miss a proper book for is flicking back to reread a bit from earlier when it suddenly gains significance later on. I do find the location thing hard to navigate but I expect I will get used to it.

sammac · 06/01/2011 23:25

Another numpty who can't do minesweeper but am finding 5 in a row strangely obsessional- me 7 Kindle 42

OmicronPersei8 · 07/01/2011 09:39

Minesweeper (if you've never played it before): The number in a square tells you how many mines are in the squares surrounding. The aim of the game is to work out where the mines are and flag those squares up, until all on the board have been marked and all empty squares revealed. If you click on a square and no number shows up, it means there are no squares with mines next to it. Sometimes large blank sections show up.

If you click on a square with a mine on it, all other mines go off and you have lost the game.

After a while you work out that some patterns of numbers show a mine's location.

The other game is strangely addictive, isn't it.

MrGrumpy · 07/01/2011 12:47

btw - haven't tried this myself yet so take no responsibility for it not working...

  1. Attach the Kindle to a computer using the USB cord.
  2. Using Windows Explorer (or whatever you use to see individual files/folders) , you should see a new drive called Kindle under My Computer. Go to that drive. (Or if you have an SD card in your Kindle, you can go to the SD drive.)
  3. Create a new folder called ?pictures? and a subfolder called ?screensavers? under it. Make sure both folder names are all lowercase.
  4. Copy your image files into the screensavers folder. Your pictures should be 600×800 pixels and black & white. I?ve only used .jpg files. I've used .png files as well
  5. After copying is complete & it is safe, remove the Kindle from the USB connection.
  6. Go to your Home menu and press alt-z. This will create a new book called ?screensavers? . Open it. You?ll see each of your pictures. You can advance through them with the prev. page and next page buttons. The new book will appear at the END of your book list
  7. While viewing your pictures, look at the bottom of the Kindle screen. If you see your battery indicator & Menu prompt, press alt-F to go into Full Screen mode.
  8. On each photo, press alt-shift-0 (i.e., alt-shift-zero) . After a brief delay, you?ll get a message that your picture has been exported as screensaver. Click Close on the message.
  9. Navigate to each of the pictures you want to use and repeat the above step.
10. When you?ve got all your pictures loaded, test them by going into & out of sleep mode. Alt-aA (i.e., alt-font size button) puts it to sleep & wakes it up again. Each time it sleeps, it should use a different image. If you see the same image all the time, relook at Step 3.

If you want to get rid of your custom screen savers, follow these steps:

  1. Attach the Kindle to a computer using the USB cord.
  2. Using Windows Explorer (or whatever you use to see individual files/folders) , go to your Kindle drive under My Computer.
  3. If you see a folder called system, skip this step. If you don?t see the system folder, click on the Tools menu & then Folder Options. Go to the View tab, and look at the Advanced Settings. Under Hidden Files and Folders, select Show Hidden Files and Folders. Click Apply, then OK. You should now see a system folder.
  4. Under the system folder, you?ll see a screen_saver folder. Delete all the files that are in that folder.
  5. After you disconnect from the USB, you may see your last custom screensaver one more time, but after that it will revert back to the pre-loaded Kindle screensaver images.

Also worth noting that there is firmware 3.03 out for the new kindles go here - www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_navbox_top_kindlelgi?nodeId=200529700

I have done this and it works fine.

ThornTree · 07/01/2011 14:41

Thank you Omi for the help on Minesweeper - will give it another bash.

OOOH MrGrumpy I had no idea you could load your own screensavers on, I feel a weekend of Kindling coming on!

MadAsASnakeNana · 07/01/2011 23:00

Am a compulsive reader. DH bought me one for Christmas + cover with light. Have fallen in love with it, carry around with me all day, can't put it down. Danger will be bankrupting us downloading all the time, it's so easy.

Horton · 08/01/2011 09:46

How do you press Alt Shift zero? Am I being stupid? I know you can get numbers via the SYM key - do I have to use that and press alt shift when I get there?

Also, how do you get the five in a row game?

Thanks!

mdavza · 08/01/2011 13:31

My DH has a waterproof cover to read Kindle in bath - works a treat!

comewhinewithme · 08/01/2011 16:53

I put some music on mine last night and it sounds good -just had it on while I was in the bath and it wasn't tinny or really low.

Love my Kindle Grin.

PDog · 08/01/2011 19:37

I've just bought a Kindle with the money my FIL gave us for Christmas. DH wanted to put it towards a chest freezer that we don't deperately need but I overruled him Grin.

Absolutely love it already - is fab, just like reading a book.

I've just ordered the lime green cover with the light too.

Ooh, didn't know you could get music on it - will have to have a look at that.

mdavza was the waterproof cover expensive? I want to be able to use it in the bath.

mdavza · 09/01/2011 14:20

Pdog No, het got it from some obscure website and it cost next to nothing. Will get details.

mdavza · 09/01/2011 14:23

Ha-ha, DH just told me that he bought
8" x 10" Ziploc bags, about 10 for £5! Works fantastic. Apparently the only actual waterproof Kindle cover is so thick you can't access the power button.
HTH!

PDog · 09/01/2011 14:30

Grin very good - will have to try that.

clangermum · 10/01/2011 11:09

Have asked MNHQ for a Kindle section under Book Club, as suggested by someone else.

Did everyone else's kindle come with a carry pouch? Mine didn't but I'm sure someone mentioned it, as in - bought a certain type of case but it was no better than the one that came free.

Am a bit miffed as I'd loaded up my wish list with a load of novels at reduced prices (think it was 12 days of Christmas special) thinking the kindle would come in time. DH got it for me, so I hadn't yet registered it to my name, and it was delayed in the post so by the time it came all the novels had gone up. I emailed amazon to see if they would honour the original price, but no luck. I was only a day over too Hmm and had got to the point of trying to check out the ebooks but told it was not possible. According to amazon I should have downloaded them somewhere else and left them there until the kindle arrived, but this wasn't obvious at the time. Hey ho. Am new to all this. Maybe I'll download some sample chapters. I just want to start off reading something really good, so it will help me get used to the kindle, rather than struggling with something mediocre

ChippyMinton · 10/01/2011 16:43

That's annoying. I've found that books change price constantly. I've got a couple of freebies which are now back up to the £3-£4 mark. The trick is to buy them when you see them. I suppose with hindsight you could've downloaded the kindle app to your PC, but I agree that wouldn't have been an obvious solution.

Good idea re the kindle topic.

clangermum · 10/01/2011 21:08

Had an email from MNHQ to say it's under consideration Smile

And saw a few titles that seemed to have gone down in price tonight so snapped them up!

ecobatty · 10/01/2011 21:18

Did you know you can download loads of out-of-copyright books for free from the project gutenberg website?

here

I have the lighted cover in blue. I am obviously very unfashionable.

TheManWhoSoldtheWorld · 10/01/2011 21:23

Ahh that's a shame, DH made me wait about two months for mine, but it was already registered in my name so I could nab any good books.

Kindle section is a good idea.
