Any Jilly Cooper fans want to chat about Jump (and other books)?

There was a lovely thread in Sept about the book so I rushed out and bought it and started reading it but gave up in boredom. Blush

Have now picked it up again and will finish it. So far I think too many characters and not enough Rupert.

So, anyone else want to chat Jilly-ness with me?

Ooh, I think "Charlie" or maybe "Tramp" to go with the 70's vibe.

AllarmBelly · 28/12/2010 19:12

LOL MissB at the trowel, Jilly characters always spend ages "doing their faces" multiple times a day.

Oh and does anyone outside Jilly's head know what "gauchos" are? Some appear near the end of Prudence (hope that doesn't spoil anything!), and Chessie wears them in Polo.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 28/12/2010 19:31

I think she's thinking of these rather than these chapsGrin

CarolSinger · 28/12/2010 22:23

And when they go to do their faces in the ladies, when they are out with someone they fancy there is never any proper make up in their, just defunct pens and bus tickets

there is never any proper make up in there

Yes, but in that case you simply have to pinch your cheeks and scrub at your drifting mascara with a crumpled tissue.

BalloonSlayer · 30/12/2010 09:34

. . . or put soap on a roller towel and clean your teeth with that.

< wince > and < boak > at pub roller towels

CarolSinger · 30/12/2010 19:14

Oh yes I'd forgotten about that grim solution BalloonSlayer.

I think I'm approaching the bit in Jump where something significant happens to a big lovely flamboyant character Sad

Jump is definately Jilly back on her best form. It made me go out and buy all the previous Rupert books too!!

I would be laughing out loud reading Jump at the way Chisholm the goat was written. Pure brilliance.

I've always been quite a Jilly fan but I absolutely loathed Wicked. In particular that paedophilia subplot seemed so gratuitous and unintentionally (no doubt) ironic considering how much time was spent dwelling on kiddie sex - both kiddie/kiddie sex and kiddie/adult sex earlier in the book.

My favourite was Rivals. Loved the Rupert/Taggie story, and enjoy it when they reappear in later books.

After Wicked I was reluctant to go out and get Jump but it can't be long before I spot a copy in the charity shop or it comes out in paperback.

bubblewrapped · 31/01/2011 00:49

Wicked was the only one I have never liked. Too political, and just not an enjoyable read.

Teachermumof3 · 07/08/2011 19:41

I know this is a very old thread, but I've just re-read Imogen, Prudence and Bella (in a weekend!) and got all nostalgic! Whilst I know they are deeply trashy; I still luuurve them! I now want to read Riders and Rivals again, although I shall have to do it secretly as DH will take the mick and make comdey cracks about melting my brain with Rupert Campbell-Black and that terrible TV version that was made, which presumably he thinks the book was just like!

I hated Jump-I thought Etta was really wet and her son and daughter were horrid. There was also not enough Rupert and the sad bit was too sad :( I actually liked Wicked, despite being a teacher and knowing the underage sex bit was very wrong, and also loved Score! Rivals and Polo were probably the best though.

Favourite men: Rupert, Ace, Ricky R-L and Matt O'Connor
Favourite ladies: Janey L-F, Chessy F-L, Fen, Prudence
Best book: Riders, (ooh, or Rivals, or Polo, or TMWMHJ...), Prudence
Things I'd like to know ... what happened to Helen-did she marry Hatchet Hawkley?, Tristan-did he live happily ever after with the make-up girl?, Isa-did he get a woman after he went to work with Rupert?!, Cameron Cook? Fen-did she have babies with Dino? Did Jake really love Tory? I'm sure some of these might have been answered and sure there are others!

Would anyone else like to have a pang of nostalgia with me!?

glitterkitty · 07/08/2011 19:51

I am panged. Read Jump about a month ago Shock tbh I wanted to like it more.

I couldnt get into the old woman with pleated bosom as sexy heroine.

Reread Rivals afterwards to take taste away!

porcamiseria · 09/09/2011 08:21

I love Riders, read it when I was 13 and along with Lace its one of the seminal growing up reads

Jump was shit, OK I read it, but I hated pathetic drippy Etta, and hardly any likeable characters

agree re Wicked shagging, I posted on this another day I cant beleive her editors let her do it. The scenes with Bianca and Feral when bianca is about 12, boak

her 70s ones are classics, my favoutite is Imogen, when they go to the South of France, and the short stories I loved too

I love Jilly, comfort reading

gethelp · 14/09/2011 18:34

Isn't Etta Jilly herself? I am a big fan, wanted desperately to live in Riders/Rivals/Prudence land, so glamorous and incredibly sexy.

WideWebWitch · 14/09/2011 18:36

I love Jilly but didn't even finish Jump, it was terrible IMO

WideWebWitch · 14/09/2011 18:36

Yy I reckon Etta is Jilly

WideWebWitch · 14/09/2011 18:37

Oh this is an old thread, never mind!

gethelp · 14/09/2011 18:39

Sorry, slow day here at gethelp towers. Looks at dishwasher and back to computer.

PattySimcox · 14/09/2011 18:40

Got all excited when I saw a Jilly thread in active convo then very confused with the OP came up purple and realised that this was an old thread of mine.

I'll happily join in with the Jilly nostalgia - having recently got an iphone I have downloaded the kindle app and am working my way through the Rutshire Chronicles in order - halfway through Polo which is joint 2nd imo with Riders, with Rivals obviously the best.

Agree Wicked child sex is horrid and Jump is poor

gethelp · 14/09/2011 18:51

Also liked 'The Common Years', recommended if you're a dog walker/gossip/nosey parker.

PattySimcox · 15/09/2011 16:40

I'm two out of three gethelp so I will look out for it Grin

SecretSquirrels · 15/09/2011 16:52

Old thread but I've been saving Jump and took it away on holiday.
Oh what a let down. I'm a third through it and have put it away while I read something else.

PattySimcox · 15/09/2011 19:40

SecretSquirrels it doesn't get much better I'm afraid
