Would like to get dh a book for xmas. We have a child free holiday coming up and I will be reading loads.

Anyone got any ideas what I could get for him as a non reader currently

How about a Danny Wallace? They are easy to read, funny and a bit blokey. Smile

sparklyjewlz · 15/12/2010 19:04

It came out a few years ago but loads of non-reading males i know enjoyed "It's all about the Bike" by Lance Armstrong.

panettoinydog · 15/12/2010 19:05

And I know I'm being irritable here, but 'non-reading men' are not a group who are all likely to enjoy the same books.

Hi mosschops,
I run a bookshop and you wouldn't believe how many times we get asked this...
Popular this xmas:

History of the World in 100 Objects (been on radio 4, real man's book. But massive hardback)
Michael McIntyre's biography
Stephen Fry's autobiography
Keith Richards' autobiography
Humour:
Dawn of the Bunny Suicides
Cyanide & Happiness pt 2
QI Annuals

Bill Bryson - Home
other Bryson stuff always goes down well with men - Try Notes from a Small Island, all about Britain

Popular always:
Flashman series
Sharpe series
Dan Brown (Da Vinci Code)
Not just for teenage girls: Steig Larsson (the girl who... series)
James Patterson (crime)

If you want me to get more specific then just shout - let me know what he's into geenrally. Hope this helps :) x

my non-reading dh would totally hate 8 of those titles.

FortunateHamster · 15/12/2010 20:54

If he likes Fringe and Lost perhaps he'd like some science fiction. Will have a think and see if I can come up with anything that isn't too full on hard SF.

coastgirl · 15/12/2010 20:57

Does he like Ricky Gervais/Karl Pilkington? There are a couple of KP books that are pretty funny. There's a book of An Idiot Abroad too if he watched that.

mosschops30 · 15/12/2010 21:21

No he hates gervais. The svdoku and crosswords r a good idea he loves those

He might like John O'Farrell's An Utterly Impartial History of Britain ? Or 2000 Years of Upper Class Idiots In Charge. It's an English history with a good mix of genuine factual information and a lot of humour. Also, because each section is quite short it's easy to dip in and out of.

KangarooCaught · 15/12/2010 22:02

I'd 2nd Carl Hiassen.

Also BlackAdder reads well.

Shallishanti · 15/12/2010 22:08

Nick Hornby- I only say this as my non reading dp shares his love of football and music, hence was able to tolerate his novels (well 2 of them anyway)

CDMforever · 15/12/2010 22:43

IT WON'T WORK!!!
For 6 years I've been trying to get my DH to get into reading. I've bought him loads of wonderful books, books that I thought he would love about subjects I know he loves. But he never ever reads them. I have now given up.
Dressing gown for xmas..........

FortunateHamster · 15/12/2010 23:40

Ok, so I'd third Carl Hiassen - funny/dark/witty crime books.

Mike Carey writes British urban fantasy that's very blokey (I love them!). Main character is an exorcist in a world where everyone sees that ghosts etc are around. Helps solves crimes. Sounds naff, really isn't. Very authentic.

If he likes House, you could try some more of the 'forensic' crime books like Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta books, or the Kathy Reichs Bones ones.

These are all crime, which is weird... Can't think of anything remotely Fringe/Lost-like - hole in the market, perhaps?

Otherwise Jenni's suggestions are great

It is hard though, trying to share a love of reading when the other person isn't interested. My husband does like books but rarely gets time to read them. Often I keep books for him/recommend specific titles, but the more I recommend, the less he wants to read them. I still think it's worth a go, though :)

essexman · 22/12/2010 12:39

If he likes stuff like Lost Stephen Kings most recent stuff is very good try Under the Dome or Duma Key.

ragged · 22/12/2010 12:43

Does it have to be fiction? I keep meaning to buy DH something by Lewis Pugh -- real life adventure maniac.

Plumm · 26/12/2010 00:14

Did you get him anything?
