remember watching oranges when very young - got the DVD waiting to watch now.

i quite like lighthousekeeping (her most recent one). it's a bit more "floaty" than oranges though.

Is that her name? I saw in it Ottakers, then wandered to WHSmiths and couldn't remeber the name. thanks!!

What about the history of Mao by The author of Wild Swans? Again, can't remember her name.

littlerach · 27/09/2005 21:20

Yes, that's it. Doesn't it look good?

bran · 27/09/2005 21:20

If you're asking about Good Behaviour, it's not chick lit. It's set in Ireland in the decade after independence (I think, or it might be the 30's) and it's about social manners and public appearance told through the eyes of someone not at all socially adept.

NotQuiteCockney · 27/09/2005 21:21

cod, is it "kids die" or "parents lose kids" that's the problem? There's a lot of the first, and not that much of the second in Kevin.

But it really is brilliant.

LOLcod · 27/09/2005 21:21

Hmm, cod, maybe Kevin isn't for you. But it's quite ... it's not very detailed with the horribleness. The main character doesn't dwell on it, IYSWIM.

(I just try not to imagine myself in the situation.)

Am I allowed to boggle at the idea of the fish being a big softie IRL?

MrsSpoon · 27/09/2005 21:30

I read No Wonder I Take A Drink recently and it was really quite funny and heartwarming.

MrsSpoon · 27/09/2005 21:33

The book NotQuiteCockney recommends I think is I'll Go To Bed At Noon by Gerard Woodward (?). I enjoyed that too but wasn't gripped, IMO it's a bit of a rambly tale, not a page turner, also found out after reading it that it is a sequel, the first one may have helped set the scene a bit better.

NotQuiteCockney · 27/09/2005 21:48

That's it, MrsSpoon.

I didn't love it, but the drinking really freaked me out. I wasn't mad for most of the Booker Prize short list, really.

expatinscotland · 27/09/2005 21:50

'Bel Canto' by Ann Patchett

weesaidie · 27/09/2005 22:20

MrsSpoon · 27/09/2005 23:04
