Potter fans, help me! I am so confused about that bloody Elder Wand in The Deathly Hallows.

I'm not normally dim, and have read The Deathly Hallows three or four times. But I just can't get my mind around the thing with the Elder Wand.

Why does Voldemort want it so much, and isn't there some confusion with the last spell done by the wand, and something backfires on Voldemort, which is how Harry finds himself in the white train station talking to Dumbledore and deciding whether to live or die in the end... help!!

I know Voldemort steals the Elder Wand out of Dumbledore's grave... but it ends up not being the right wand...? Or something...?

HELP!!

Oh the Dobby bit it too sad - far far sadder in the book than the film for certain

BelligerentGhoul · 14/12/2010 20:21

I still managed to sob my heart out in the film! Thought Daniel R was at his best there.

JackSawMamaKissingSantaClaus · 14/12/2010 21:06

He's yummy, isn't he. But why are the current crop of young British actors (Daniel Radcliffe, Robert Pattinson) so pale and skinny??

Harry didn't die because Voldemort had taken his blood in an earlier book, so Harry's mum's protection was actually still livingo inside Voldemort, which is why Harry couldn't die

JackSawMamaKissingSantaClaus · 14/12/2010 21:06

What... I'm back to being confused. Confused

Is that my fault? Sorry

PortlyBlackSantaUpAChimney · 14/12/2010 21:17

See - i understand this now. But the first time i read the last few chapters alot of Gin had been consumed and i thought the little shrivelled creature was Dumbledore's soul coming back to life. I saw him as the phoenix and thought he'd regrow from the flames like his pet....and be there at the end - maybe even as a youngster.

i.e. got it completely wrong....

PortlyBlackSantaUpAChimney · 14/12/2010 21:19

not unless you were serving the Gin oricella Xmas Wink

JackSawMamaKissingSantaClaus · 14/12/2010 21:21

LOL at both of you.

Ok, maybe I'm not quite as confuddled as I thought. But when I re-read, I'm going to keep this thread close! Or print it, or something.

oricella · 14/12/2010 21:23

You're not confuddled - you're confunded...

JackSawMamaKissingSantaClaus · 14/12/2010 21:24

Confounded, you mean?

Better than Obliviated, I think... :o

DasherandSmugly · 14/12/2010 22:38

No confunded I think.

JackSawMamaKissingSantaClaus · 14/12/2010 23:03

Confoozled?

Definitely a confundus charm flying around here Xmas Wink

A bit of Harry & Voldie lived in each other - the accidental horcrux in Harry and Lily's protection in the bit of Harry's blood in Voldie. But those bits stopped working after Harry accepted his fate and died. It's still a bit confusing actually. I'm going to have to read it again now Xmas Grin

DandyDan · 15/12/2010 09:55

This is (partly) why I think Deathly Hallows pretty much sucks as a final book. Too complicated by far - the wandiness and blood-protection issues - let alone the fact that Harry gets to throw UnForgiveables about because someone insults his teacher, and he is never pulled up on it. Harry's heroism just doesn't work as a story, as it's entirely manufactured and "sacrifice-by-numbers".

BertieBottlesOfMulledWine · 15/12/2010 11:05

This is fab: Mark Reads Harry Potter. Really funny and I understood some bits better which I didn't really get the first time.

DasherandSmugly · 15/12/2010 11:15

I love Deathly Hallows.

JackSawMamaKissingSantaClaus · 15/12/2010 15:29

I love all the books.
