I just finished this and must say I loved it. Nigel Slater makes it so easy to read about his childhood filling the pages with a mixture of wit, sadness and memories.

I felt like giving him the biggest cuddle though after reading it Sad

I loved his style of writing. Has he written anything else like this? I'll be having a google but it'd be nice to have mn recommendations Xmas Smile

Hi there. I read this and loved it. Bizarrely this was when snowed in last year and couldnt get home so borrowed it from a friend. We're in the same boat again today.
Anyway, although a recipe sort of book, I also like 'The Kitchen Diaries'. It is a lovely meander through the year and the seasons. It is as well written but isnt quite so much auto-biog. He is a good writer and I can hear his voice as I read. Good for dipping into.

Also loved it; agree about the hugs. Difficult childhood - poor fella. You can really see how he has created a safe place for himself around food.

Did you know that there is a TV film on the BBC this christmas?

I read this a couple of years ago; hadn't a clue who Nigel Slater was and pictured him as a clone of Andrew Marr Grin. It's a very warm and comforting book, a bit like a fluffy blanket.

I do like fiction that includes recipes: The Cure for Death by Lightning, Like Water for Chocolate. Can anyone think of any more?

dbm · 07/12/2010 15:16

Jux - I think Joanne Harris captures food well in Chocolat and also, my favourite, Blackberry Wine. She also did one about oranges but I cant remember that title.

Jux · 08/12/2010 12:07

dbm, I was reading Like Water for Chocolate when Chocolat came out, so was unreasonably prejudiced against the latter! "Of course my chocolate book is better than that chocolate book" and stuff like that! I'm still of the same opinion, but am quite prepared to be told I'm wrong (though no one will change my mind because I am being unreasonable about it Grin)
