Both good authors that I have enjoyed , if he hasn't read any before start at the beginning of the series with the Lee child ones to get the "whole story"
Tess gerritson
Jeffrey deaver
Johnathon or Faye kellerman

Agree with both the Kellermans & Lee Child. First Lee Child is Killing Floor

Also recommend Harlan Coben, Robert Crais & Michael Connelly. All of these do stand alone books but also have a continuing character.

One of my favourite authors is James Lee Burke. Not everyone likes him, can be a bit hard to get into but worth trying.

If he likes a bit of humour, Carl Hiaasan does crime with humour, another of my favourites. A good one to maybe try is Skinny Dip.

Steig Larsson or Jo Nesbo?
Swedish and Norweigan. Both excellent IMO.

ABitBatty · 03/12/2010 15:56

Mark Billingham

Dean Koontz early stuff is brilliant, Lightening and Watchers are my favourites.

Also second Harlan Coben but some of his books are part of the Myron Bolitar series, can read as stand alone but they do refer to older books.

Karen Rose is excellent, but pretty graphic!

Karin Slaughter is great too, but again some of her books are part of the Sara Linton series, not really good for stand alone.

James Patterson again has a couple of serial books - Alex Cross being one of them, great books but really need to be read in order.

I could go on and on and on, but I'll stop now!

MrsSnaplegs · 03/12/2010 17:48

Matthew Reilly - although based around an ex special forces team they are excellent - start with ice station

KurriKurri · 03/12/2010 18:51

Mark Billingham

Stuart McBride

Reginald Hill

Jo Nesbo

Simon Beckett

All popular with DH and our various male friends.

If he likes crime and gangsters then Jake Arnott is good - have read The Long Firm and He Kills Coppers by him - they're both good.

ItsJustMyOpinion · 05/12/2010 15:54

James Lee Burke is a favourite of ours, especially the Dave Robicheaux novels, but again best read in order, Start with

The Neon Rain
Heaven's prisoners
Black Cherry Blues
A Morning for Flamingoes

I think there are at least 12 in total

Goingspare · 05/12/2010 15:57

Ian Rankin - Rebus books.

Goingspare · 05/12/2010 15:58

(Knots & Crosses is the first Rebus novel.)

asmallbunchofflowers · 05/12/2010 20:33

The Wallander books by Henning Mankell?

ZacharyQuack · 06/12/2010 08:04

Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series is great, start with The Black Echo.

Lee Child is really really good, but you don't really need to read them in order as each book is set in a new location with new characters.

Dennis Lehane's Kenzie/Gennaro series - these must be read in order as the characters progress, start with A Drink Before the War.

stickersarecurrency · 06/12/2010 08:09

Harlen Coben good - I read them in random order, no problems. Easy reading and formulaic but page-turners. What about Christopher Brookmyre? Very black humour.

Greenmantle · 06/12/2010 14:41

Rebus novels are very good although I don't think Rankin really gets into his stride until about book 5 or 6 in the series.

Would also recommend Jo Nesbo.
