If so - which is better:

The Loving Spirit; or
The Scapegoat ?

I have both on my to be read pile and just doing some holiday packing and was going to take one but which ???? Anyone read them ?

Ages since I read both, but Loving Spirit is the first book she wrote, and a fairly simple family saga type thing. The Scapegoat is a bit more of a thriller, more like her later style of writing. Personally I'd take The Scapegoat, buty then i prefer her later books.

reading frenchmans creek at the moment

sorry I know that doesnt help with your question, just thought I'd mention it

Hazellnut · 22/09/2005 17:23

Thanks !! I think I had decided on The Scapegoat from reading the backs and its the one I've had the longest anyway !

Spykid - I have read frenchman's creek - what do you think ? Its not one of my faves but I am trying to read through all of them. Rebecca is my absolute favourite so far, and it was my first. also loved the kings general which is completely different.

not far into it so will let you know.
Rebecca is my fave too, have you read Sally Beaumans sequel...Rebeccas tale?

Marina · 22/09/2005 17:25

Would also plump for The Scapegoat but my personal favourite is The House on the Strand

Hazellnut · 22/09/2005 17:46

Spykid - I have read the sequel - as a sequel I didn't really like it but I think thats because I didbn't think it happened like that IYKWIM ! I don't think I would have thought that if it had been a Daphne Du M sequel ! As a stand alone book though I quite liked it...

Thanks for the vote Marina - I'll get House on the Strand next then in that case, I am trying to read through the lot !

Jamaica Inn, anybody?

Fab - really dark and scary. and its a real place, on the A30 on top of Bodmin Moor.

Pagan · 23/09/2005 15:48

Jamaica Inn is the only one I've read but I loved it. Didn't realise it was a real place - must go and visit one day although I have a vivid pic ofit in my head and don't want it spoiled

pixel · 23/09/2005 21:53

I actually bought my copy at Jamaica Inn many years ago and it's stamped inside the front cover to say so. Could be worth a fortune some day!

The House on The Strand is my favourite too, I love time-travel stories and found this completely gripping.

LIZS · 23/09/2005 21:56

Love Rebecca - it is up there with Jane Austen. did read a few of her others but they're packed away atm and it was a long time ago !

Also read Rebecca's Tale and was a bit unconvinced.

dinny · 23/09/2005 21:57

Love her - Spykid, my bf at school's house w as at top of Frenchman's Creek...

zaphod · 23/09/2005 21:58

Loved Frenchmans Creek, and Jamaica Inn, but I thought Rebecca was just too sad.

Hazellnut · 23/09/2005 22:32

Liked Jamaican Inn too ! I love Daphne Du Maurier !! Haven't read House on the Strand either - must add it to the list. Mind you, both dh and my mum know I am trying to read them all so I usually get 2 for birthdays and christmases !!

I've only read Rebecca, which I loved, have Frenchmans Creek to my to read mountain, terrified to start it in case it is no where near as good as Rebecca.

DumbledoresGirl · 12/03/2006 20:21

Ooh a Daphne du Maurier thread. I read Rebecca about a year ago and thought it was brilliant and have just read Jamaica Inn, ill in bed this weekend.

Any other recommendations by the same author? Which are the best?
