Here are a few that I think you'd love...

Any Human Heart - William Boyd (historical novel panning 20th century)

The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoot - David Mitchell (historical novel set in Japan in 18th century)

Brooklyn - Colm Toibin (1950s story set in Ireland and New York)

Restoration or Music and Silence - Rose Tremain (both brilliant historical novels)

I'll try and think of a few more - I have very similar taste in authors to you, so will scan my shelves and see what leaps out...

Have a look at the C J Samson novels about Matthew Shardlake, if you like Historical fiction they are excellent.

Just discovered Philip Kerr and his PI called Bernie Gunther - set just after WW2 in Munich - brilliant.
Second the recommendation for CJ Sansom too

Book of Negroes is a wonderful book! I recommend it to everyone!
Amitav Ghosh? The Glass Palace was great but I think I preferred The Hungry Tide. Sea of Poppies is a historical epic but I battled with this one.
I also loved 'Cloth Girl' by Marilyn Heward Mills, set in Africa, Ghana I think.

I've just finished Lark and Termite, Jayne Anne Phillips, really good - Served badly by a meh cover.

And I love Cormac McCarthy too. You might like Raymond Carver short stories? Or Ernest Hemingway - A Farewell to Arms? Have you read A Fine Balance, Rohinton MIstry? wonderful.

infin · 17/11/2010 20:16

Ah, 'A Fine Balance'. My favourite book of all time. Except that now I'm re-reading it on my Kindle for the first time in about 10 years. But now I'm older and softer, or simply because I know what is coming I just can't read the last 15%, it is so incredibly sad.

fab, thanks. kindle is filling up fast.
