I recently read a book called The Unknown Warriors. It is loads of wartime memories from war veterans, everything from women who served in the Timber Corp to ex POWs of the Japanese who suffered terribly. The twist is that it is not just war memories but also how they coped in the years after the war and what they think of the country now. It makes for a VERY interesting read. The website on the back of the book is www.theunknownwarriors.co.uk

It's a bit thick and heavy, and doesn't have the simplicity of a memoir, but Antony Beevor's "D-Day" is an incredible overview of the end of the war and shows how close the allies came to losing it even at that stage. I found it particularly interesting because my husband dragged me camping around normandy a couple of years ago (it's OK, we then carried on to Paris!), so it put all the things we saw in context
