Any good?

I love Wolf Hall but it took me 4 months to read. This is even thicker.

I'll be back for your thoughs in about a year

Yes, it's good. The same drawbacks as WH though, takes ages to get into, all the characters seem to merge. Personally, I'm not 'a fan' of the 18th C so didn't enjoy it as much as WH. Worth it.

Goingspare · 03/11/2010 21:49

Read it this summer and enjoyed it, though had to take a break halfway through to read a detective novel - if only because the print was a bit dense in my paperback, particularly when reading by tent lamp. It reads a bit like a prototype for WH - the characters have a similar style of speech and dry humour.

Not quite as good as WH, but worth reading.

I really enjoyed this one (even if I did know enough of the history to know how it would end). I thought that it went by very quickly. Moving on to WH. Hope it is as good.

Byblyofyle · 04/11/2010 13:51

Enjoyed WH but couldn't get into Greater Safety. Perhaps I'll give it another go if you enjoy it Wink

I loved Beyond Black and Wolf Hall but haven't read this one.

Goingspare · 04/11/2010 20:53

Just looked up Beyond Black on Amazon - think I'll read that next.

It was never going to have a surprise happy ending, was it horsemadmom? Wink

SpringHeeledJack · 04/11/2010 20:58

oooooh this is my favouritist

I liked it loads better than WH- it was the first one I read- after that all the others have been a slight anticlimax

I thought the characters seemed to walk right off the page and I fancied every last one of them

yes even Robespierre

It's obvious that Hilary Mantel fancies them all, especially Robespierre.

This is my first mumsnet post. I had to comment because this is one of my favourite books. I read it many moons ago and I fell madly in love with Camille. In fact, I am STILL in love with him now. This was before the WWW was widely available and I spent hours in the library trying to track down portraits of him. Blush Hope you enjoy it.

SpringHeeledJack · 05/11/2010 09:03

oh absolutely Binkle

this particular character was a stroke of genius on HM's part, I reckon. There's very little to find about Camille Desmoulins round these parts (presumably he's a lot more known in France?) Even in Simon Schama's Citizens he only gets a few pages, iirc

he was wonderful. I fancied Lucille as well. She was fabulous

SpringHeeledJack · 05/11/2010 09:04

(I'm a bit jealous. I wish my first mn post had been about Camille Desmoulins)

Totally agree about Lucille.
