Any good?

I love Wolf Hall but it took me 4 months to read. This is even thicker.

I'll be back for your thoughs in about a year

Yes, it's good. The same drawbacks as WH though, takes ages to get into, all the characters seem to merge. Personally, I'm not 'a fan' of the 18th C so didn't enjoy it as much as WH. Worth it.

Read it this summer and enjoyed it, though had to take a break halfway through to read a detective novel - if only because the print was a bit dense in my paperback, particularly when reading by tent lamp. It reads a bit like a prototype for WH - the characters have a similar style of speech and dry humour.

Not quite as good as WH, but worth reading.

I really enjoyed this one (even if I did know enough of the history to know how it would end). I thought that it went by very quickly. Moving on to WH. Hope it is as good.

Enjoyed WH but couldn't get into Greater Safety. Perhaps I'll give it another go if you enjoy it Wink

oooooh this is my favouritist

I liked it loads better than WH- it was the first one I read- after that all the others have been a slight anticlimax

I thought the characters seemed to walk right off the page and I fancied every last one of them

This is my first mumsnet post. I had to comment because this is one of my favourite books. I read it many moons ago and I fell madly in love with Camille. In fact, I am STILL in love with him now. This was before the WWW was widely available and I spent hours in the library trying to track down portraits of him. Blush Hope you enjoy it.

this particular character was a stroke of genius on HM's part, I reckon. There's very little to find about Camille Desmoulins round these parts (presumably he's a lot more known in France?) Even in Simon Schama's Citizens he only gets a few pages, iirc

he was wonderful. I fancied Lucille as well. She was fabulous
