Hi

I have reserved this book from my local library.

But wanted some opinions to see if it actually lived up to all the hype.

I usually read "chick-lit" and I love Alexander McCall Smith and Patricia Cornwell.

All opinions welcome

I couldnt get past the first page but my SIL loved it.

Um I think if you read self help books nad enjoy them then you might like it?

EauRouge · 16/10/2010 09:10

I hated it, I managed to get through the Italy (Eat) part but I found the author far too whiny and self-obsessed and after a while I just wanted to shake her and tell her to pull herself together.

OTOH, my best friend loved it so it's probably worth a go even if you only get 5 pages in and go 'arrrgggh!!' Grin

I usually read whatever's in my local library (chick-lit and crime, it's a small library)

I found the meditating part interesting and liked reading about Bali (the place) but otherwise, I found it quite mediocre. Many people I know have raved about it though. I'm not sure why I didn't: maybe because I have done an awful lot of travelling/experimenting and the author reminded me a lot of my younger self Grin

I found it deeply annoying. Parts were great, but in other sections wanted to give the author a big slap.

You know when you are reading a book and you find yourself having to re-read the same paragraph because the television/cat/dust in the rays of sunlight coming through the window is FAR more interesting?
Well, thats Eat, Pray, Love.

Like EauRouge however - my best friend loved it.

I got almost through the Italy bit despite the tele/cat/sparkly dust - and I hated it.

Am just about to start it too! Not sure I should have bought it now!

I read it - I wasn't expecting anything good TBH and wasn't planning on reading it - a friend gave it to me.

I thought it was ok - I quite enjoyed Italy, then she went to India and I found that a bit too spiritual for me and after reading some reviews on Amazon I decided to skip the rest of India and read Bali which I really enjoyed. I enjoyed the travel bits of Bali rather than the author's 'journey'. I agree very self indulgent for the author who seems quite self obsessed.

Caz10 · 18/10/2010 20:40

It was just OK!! Not good or bad really. Save it for when you have the flu and can't take much in, that's what I did Grin

MidnightsChild · 18/10/2010 20:47

Agreed ... a friend gave it to me and told me I had to read it. As I ignored the last book she'd done that to me with (and later regretted), I decided to read it against my better judgement.

I can understand why she felt it would be helpful (I'd just come out of a long relationship and was trying to build a new life). But, I agree with others ... it was tedious and decidedly over-hyped. Mind you, I'm tempted to see the film simply for Javier Bardem Wink

The one bit I remember with amusement and affection is the section where she goes to a football match in Italy where, after much swearing and gesticulating, the local team lose. So the blokes all go to drown their sorrows ... at the local patisserie shop! Only in Italy eh? Smile
