Second vote for short stores by Christopher Fowler - he has a few collections. Absolutely brilliant modern horror.

Also - Clive Barker short stories - Books of Blood collections.

I found Neil Gaimans 'smoke and mirrors' (short stories) really spooked me (but I do scare very easily)

Geralds Game by Stephen King. Read it on holiday when I was 16, stayed up late in the villa one night reading it and then struggled to pluck up the courage to walk down the corridor to the bedroom! Blooming good book though.
