I am urgent need of some new reading matter, can someone suggest something new for me?

Random books that I have really loved reading and not wanted to end in the past include:

Behind the scenes at the museum by Kate Atkinson
The Time Traveller's Wife
The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons
The Siege by Helen Dunmore (and just read the sequel, The Betrayel and loved that too)
South of the Border, West of the Sun by Haruki Murukami, and also Norwegian Wood, by the same author.
Blackbird by Jennifer Lauck, the prose just seemed to sing off the page.

The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

Also liked The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory, have read most of her books and generally quite like them.
Also like Anita Shreve...

Any suggestions for me anyone, please! :)

Any other Kate Atkinson, they are good.

Currently reading The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters and that is intriguing.

Under the Dome by Stephen King - don't normally like his books but it is a great read.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 15/09/2010 21:28

Oh yes, just read that and was engrossed.

The Guernsey Potatoe Pie and Literary Society

The Whaleboat House

The Glass Room by Simon Mawer is fab as is Wolf Hall (if you can get past the first hundred pages). Also enjoyed Prep and An American Wife by Curtis Sittenfield.

Big Stone Gap by Adriana Trigiani or any of hers tbh

Lucia, Lucia
Queen of the big time
Old Cherry Holler
Milk Glass Moon
Home to Big Stone Gap

Really lovely books - fairly easy reads, likeable characters and quite thought provoking.

Have you read 'The help'? It's fab!

Try books by Emily Barr or Sophie Hannah. a bit of chick lit but with a darker/sinister edge.

arfasleep · 26/09/2010 22:01

I really enjoyed 'Watch me disappear' by Jill Dawson, very expressive, also 'the other hand' by chris cleave (i think). Got 'the help' recently, goin to start on it soon, looks good

Have you read anything by Rose Tremain - recommend Music & Silence. Quite quirky subject - it's about a Danish king and his court in the 16th (?) century, but I found it compulsively readable.

I see you like The Siege (so do I) have you read Helen Dunmore's book set in Finland, House of Orphans?

celticlassie · 28/09/2010 21:27

I liked a few from your op and loved The House at Riverton by Kate Morton. Also loved The Poisonwood Bible by Barbera Kingsolver, The Legacy by Katherine Webb and Mudbound by Hillary Jordan to name but a few...

MrsDanversBites · 29/09/2010 09:34

Definitely would echo the Rose Tremain reccy also Sarah Waters and Kate Atkinson

however I'd rather wrench my own toe-nails out with pliers than pick up The House at rIverton again

.

Just finished Audrey Niffenegger's new(ish) one, Her Fearful Symmetry, and it was excellent; couldn't put it down. One Day by David Nicholls was another that had me gripped.

Room by Emma Donaghue - it's great, I was worried that it would be distressing because of the subject matter, but it's oddly lovely.
