It's a bit uncomfortable because there are so many real life parallels; really enjoying it but also feel it's quite close to real people's situations?

I have read all her other books and I have just bought this and can't wait to start reading it.

StealthPolarBear · 27/08/2010 13:33

sophie hannah, yes have read it

StealthPolarBear · 27/08/2010 13:33

can't remember the details, remind me without giving anything away
She writes a lot about having babies and breastfeeding - is that what you mean?

I've just picked this up from a charity shop for a quid or so, in completely pristine condition Grin, and it's on my to-read list. I promised myself that I was giving up on SH after 'The Other Half Lives' because the plot was so fantastically convoluted and indeed maddening....I was driven to screaming irritation by the way she dreams up seemingly-impossible situations and then squirms out of them with explanations that leave your brain reeling. BUT I succumbed....mainly to see whether this one would be any less annoying. Have a feeling that it'll be the same though.

StealthPolarBear · 27/08/2010 13:47

which one was the other half lives?
I do like her novels but know what you mean about the impossible situations!

StealthPolarBear · 27/08/2010 13:48

ahhh room swept white is the one about women accused of killing their babies, isn't it?

deedar · 27/08/2010 14:10

yeah, am reading it now. Finding it a bit odd; it seems so clearly based on the cases in the 1990s where women were jailed on evidence from prof Roy Meadow (his general rule was 'unless proven otherwise, one cot death is tragic, two is suspicious and three is murder'), before he was struck off. And yet, now she's introduced a serial killer Hmm

Is it meant to be based on real life, or is she just too lazy to come up with an original idea?

Anyway, it's annoying me already - Fliss is one of the most irritating characters I've read for years. I am hoping that there is a serial killer, and that he/she will come for her very, very soon...

StealthPolarBear · 27/08/2010 14:29

yes, it was heavily based on that I thought.
Also read a book recently that seemed to be based on the Jamie Bulger case, anyone know which one I'm thinking of?

Salteena · 27/08/2010 14:37

'The Other Half Lives' was about a man who insisted, in the face of all evidence to the contrary, that he'd murdered someone....even when the supposed victim turned out to be alive. That's putting it very simply - I couldn't begin to explain the contortions she went through to reconcile these two plot-threads and come up with an explanation. I started out rather enjoying her books - 'Little Face' was good. But each one since has become more and more and more extreme and frankly unbelievable, imho. Her plots are so convoluted, for me it gets in the way of enjoying the book.

StealthPolarBear · 27/08/2010 14:41

that's right, the one with the art gallery. I can't remember the details but remember the vague outline.

Back - finished it en route to museum. Really weird, convoluted ending which seems to have been written after editing of first part iyswim? New character, knowledge, etc. Also the female xter that has cancer and decides to raise money by running marathons? Bit true to real life? Yes polar it's about babiues and whether they died 'of natural causes'. Really disappointed by the ending. And the last bit I almost didn't read, thinking it wasn't part of the book!
