Anyone else reading it? I am intrigued by it - dying to start reading!

Just ordered it on Amazon so will be back soon!

DirtyMartini · 25/08/2010 15:48

gah. too hormonal for it really, but skimmed it in W-stones today and had to have a little cry over in a corner.

Pinkglow · 25/08/2010 16:18

I really liked it, there were plenty of issues stuffed in there like prolonged breastfeeding and how much time people talk to thier children but because its told from the point of view of the child its not too graphic.

Getting into this now: oh my god! What a book!

Have just started this, but don't know whether to carry on. I can't bear the child's "voice". Does it continue in the same style?

wukter · 09/09/2010 12:25

Just finished it.
It's amazing. So emotional, and I rarely respond emotionally to books.

Agent, yes the child's voice continues on the same fundamentally, but matures a bit.

Such a lot in it.

AgentProvocateur · 10/09/2010 19:02

OK, I persevered, and I've finsished it now, but I have to say that I'm a bit underwhelmed.

I didn't really find it emotional (but I have a heart of stone Wink), and I certainly don't think it's worthy of being on the Booker shortlist.

I thought it was an airport-shop novel (sorry to be such a literary snob) - a good read by the pool, but not much depth.

I'm reading it for my book group, so I'll find out what the others thought next week.

I am prepared to be in the minority here!

wukter · 10/09/2010 22:06

I found it very engaging, and I can be hard to please.

The sense of claustrophobia was very well done, interestingly even after they got out.

LittleCheesyPineappleOne · 16/09/2010 18:42

What AgentProvocateur said. Entertaining, nicely written, but the plot was a bit far fetched - especially the escape - and it lacked .. something. Definitely not Booker Prize worthy, compared to previous winners/shortlisted books.

elkiedee · 17/09/2010 11:55

I've almost finished it - just 10 pages left. I think it's excellent, and disagree about airport books, and I do read trash sometimes too. Agent and Cheesy, what books do you think are worthy of the Booker shortlist? What books are profoundly literary enough.

basildonbond · 18/09/2010 19:18

two chapters in and really not enjoying it ... I've got the same reaction of slighly raised hackles as I got reading The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas ....

is it just from the child's POV all the way through?? I want the mother's voice - hell, I even want the abductor's voice ..

PurpleLoopyWolf · 20/09/2010 00:50

Agree with AgentProvocateur and LittleCheesyPineappleOne - I was very disappointed, seemingly just a duplicate of the media reportings on the Fitzil/ Jaycee Lee Dugard/ Natascha Kampusch cases, and not a very good one at that.I was expecting something a bit more entertaining and original.

DirtyMartini · 20/09/2010 19:06

I don't like the present tense thing, generally. Have always felt that way. I read that Philip Pullman has expressed dislike of it as well recently, and it made me realize that this is in fact a legitimate reason not to warm to a book, as opposed to a failing on my part...

Despite only having skimmed Room, as stated earlier, I have an impression of it as heartstring-pulling but not very deep. OK, I did cry in the bookshop, but anything involving small kids will do that to me because I am a wimp.
