Have you read the other Alexander McCall Smith books - the Isabel Dalhousie ones? I loved the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency novels so I got the Sunday Philosophy Club and hated it. It didn't feel like it was written by the same person, felt rather Aga Saga-ish - didn't warm to Isabel Dalhousie at all, in fact she irritated me enormously (like the bit about being made coffee and trying to drink it to be polite even though it was - horrors - instant).

Bring back Mma Ramotswe!

Anyone tried any of his others - the 2 and a Half Pillars of Wisdom, or At the Villa of Reduced Circumstances?

And are the Akimbo series of books for kids?

Can't help with any of those Moo but I had been wondering about 22 Scotland Street (think that's what it is called). I think it's a new series but could be wrong.

I liked the sunday philosophy club...., but not my fave.
I adore Mma Ramotswe, have also read the 2 and a half pillars and the villa of reduced circumstances, they're brilliant!
dd has one by him too but can't remember title, it's a series of short stories from Africa, v good indeed

I'm reading 22 Scotland Street at the moment and enjoying it. It was written as a daily column for a Scottish paper so it is in very manageable chunks

Just read 22 Scotland Street and liked it.

Really enjoyed the No. 1 detective agency books too!

weesaidie · 24/08/2005 19:21

Eh guys it's 44 Scotland Street (and down the road from me!)... lol

I have also just read it (plus all the detective ones), love them, very restful.

weesaidie · 24/08/2005 19:22

not so keen on the philosophers club either, a little on the pompous side I thought.

soapbox · 24/08/2005 19:26

Just checked you are right it is indeed 44

Too many cocktails at the African themed night at the hotel (still on holiday)

swedishmum · 31/08/2005 23:20

Am I alone in finding them easy reading but dull?

marthamoo · 31/08/2005 23:26

I thought this thread had died a big clunking death!

NO, I like them as bedside reading, good enough to relax me as a fairy story, not complex enough to keep me awake all night
