I'm halfway through this and don't think I've ever laughed out loud so much at a book! It's totally not the kind of thing I'd normally read... I recommend it to anyone who wants to read something summery and have a laugh!

Has anyone else read it who can back me up?! Would welcome suggestions on what to read next that can make me laugh as much as this

Could I third this as the funniest book I have read - ever. Its laugh out loud til your sides hurt and you need the bucket... you'd have to read the book to get that bit.

My husband got it as a present for me after hearing it serialised on R4 - I put it off and off - as you do, when hubbie buys a book

Then loved it - would not recommend it in houses with thin walls as you would wake the kids... Its very funny, but also for anyone who was a child in the 70s reminds you of your childhood and camping, and friendships and relationships.

I didn't really enjoy this.

AlaskaNebraska · 25/07/2010 15:14

oh i DIDNT LIKE IT
the "hilarious" enldess disasters annoyed me and as a veteran of 70s camping just didnt strike true

AlaskaNebraska · 25/07/2010 15:15

i LOVE you roisin
its so dire adn contrived. i did find the parents interesting figures. just one mishap after another the charachters werent developed.
it was a benny hill sketch of a book

ninah · 25/07/2010 15:16

well it's a great title

I'm still loving it and I couldn't stand Benny Hill! I agree that parts of it have probably been exaggerated but it makes it more funny so what does it really matter? If you read it in search of deep thought and complex characters I grant that you may be disappointed! However if you just want an easy read and a good laugh it's fabulous.
I've just finished the chapter with the rotisserie chickens and the French shop assistant saying 'Non' and found that the funniest bit so far
I'd have loved to have heard it serialised on R4 Icanboogie, hope they repeat it!

I think a better comparison than Benny Hill would be 'Cider with Rosie' crossed with 'Benidorm'

I loved it because it was so like our familys' disasterous camping trips in the 70s. Like the time we were carried across a field in Dorset in our frame tent (bedroom) by a gale force wind.
I read it on a camping holiday a few weeks ago, much to the irritation of DS2 because I couldn't help bellowing with laughter every so often.

Fuuny, summery book 'Driving over Lemons' by Chris Stewart is laugh out loud funny.

FreddoBaggyMac · 27/07/2010 11:17

thanks LightShines - will have a look at that one!
