As an example to what I mean I read..

New books I have been waiting for whether owned by me or library in my comfy armchair with hot choc while the dd's are properly distracted or in bed.
(Last few have been Lee Child, Stephen King, Jeffrey Deaver, Charlaine Harris, all MN bookclub books)

Random 'quick choices' from the library in the garden, park, on teh sofa while watching telly, while cooking. (currently any Dean Koontz, google earth

Old books, re-reads in the bath, in bed or on the beach (lots of opportunity for wrecking)
(mostly chick lit shopaholic or older books I ahve ahd for years and erotica)

So currently I have a bookshelf in the spare room for 'bath reads' which is currently soemthing called Miss Wyoming by god knows who, a Dean Koontz I haven't read next to the laptop, the new lee Child is over there on my armchair after the second reading and I have a Clive Cussler in the kitchen.

So that's 3 or 4 on the go at once, is that normal?

Miss Wyoming is by Douglas Coupland and is good fun.

I read anywhere except in cars/on coaches, as I get travel sick.

I like Stephen King, re-read Jane Austen's every year, love the CJ Sansom mysteries (new one out in September I think), like Bill Bryson.

I read Georgette Heyer or children's books for comfort reads and generally history or art for non-fiction.

The last books I read were: Never The Bride - a v silly romp set in Whitby which was bonkers but I did enjoy it / A silly Jasper Fffffforde one - he irritates the hellout of me but it was 30p in the charity shop and I was desperate.

Now reading - Wedlock - something to do with a horrible husband and poison - I've only read about three pages so far and then fell asleep last night with it in my hand.

Ah, children's books. All my old ones are stored in boxes under my bed so I can reach under the bed, wheel out a box and pick up a hardy boy's mystery when I can't sleep!

in the bath and in bed, i dont care if its a new book or not, nothing better than a bubble bath and a book.

haven't read anything too exciting for ages due to comedy pregnancy tirdness, but last book was the last of the Dean Koontz Odd Thomas books.

we moved house a few months ago and dp tried to throw out all my books . his argument was that i had read them all! i have books that i have had for 20 years, i am not about to throw a single one away.

BelligerentGhoul · 21/07/2010 22:18

I drowned my ancient copy of 'Emma' in the bath last week.

stainesmassif · 21/07/2010 22:27

in the bath, natch. in bed. on the train to work. in the garden when ds naps. i often have an emergency book in the car also. just in case. am only on one at the moment - made the mistake of buying his dark materials in one volume. it weighs about a kilo. dh wouldn't bother suggesting i throw out my books or he might find himself minus his puter.

Oh yes, I forgot my car book. It's currently some really weird thing about some teenage kids and a nosferatu type vampire I liberated from MIL's house when we were bedside sitting. I do not recommend it.

I had to get rid of a load of books a few months ago. My mum cleared out all her books, including my father's load of crap books. I had no room for them, neither did any of my sisters, and the book shops woudln't take them for free. I boxed them up to dump around charity shops in town, had 4 banana boxes full.
DH took them to the tip

I just gave up on the bride stripped bare - last garden book. Anyone manage it?

meridian · 22/07/2010 13:39

I usually have three or 4 books on the go as I read things depending on my mood.. if its a face paced story I will stick with one book till it is finished and it will go with me everywhere. If its a slow book or chapter my brain will switch off and I will pick up a diffrent one.

currently ready Sunshine by Robin McKinley which I read in the garden and curled up on the sofa.

ocassionally read in the car (on straight roads only), and often take a paperback with me to coffee shops and the park. Love reading in the bath (with a cold drink and sweets) though paperback only for the wreacking factor and I dont want to hold up a damned heavy hardbacked book in the bath.

I also almost exclusively use pretty gift cards (empty of monies sadly) as bookmarks.. as they are plastic they wont get ruined when i drop it in the tub for the 40th time.

OP, you're not alone in reading several books at the same time. My tally is usually about 5 or 6, or sometimes even more (). I read everywhere except the bath, as I almost always have showers; haven't found a showerproof book yet, but if such a thing existed, I'd be buying it!

DH dreads me going out of the house because I almost invariably come back with more books (thanks to a bad charity-shop habit - though anything not classed as a 'keeper' goes back to charity in due course). If I know I'm going anywhere, eg the commute to work, I must have something to read in my bag, just in case. On plane journeys of any longer than 4 or 5 hours, I'll take at least 2 books, in case I finish one (it has been known). I also always keep a book in my gym bag in case I go for a coffee afterwards, and don't have anything to read.

I am a hopeless case.

stainesmassif · 22/07/2010 16:39

I have read in the shower! Magazines only, so it doesn't count.

Oumasrusks · 23/07/2010 07:39

I also read several books at a time.

I usually read on the sofa in the evenings while DH watches telly or I try and snatch 5 minutes here and there during the day while my DDs play in the garden. I can't read on trains or in cars as I just can't seem to concentrate properly.

I adore children's books as comfort reads too and I'm building up my collection of Chalet School books and Noel Streatfeild and Lorna Hill.

Quality · 23/07/2010 08:20

I'm not alone then! My family always used to take the piss out of me because I always havea book within reach, even if I am just going to the shop, there is always a book in my bag so I can stop at a park or something with the dd's and have something to do (obviously playing with them is nto an option)
What is funny is that DD's have started doing the same, DD1 sleeps with 3 books under her pillow, and dd2 always has a book in her bed, even though they can't read yet!

'boouh' was one of ds's first words, so i'm hoping he's going to follow in my footsteps - dh not a big reader unless it's on a computer screen.
i also have very vivid memories of reading the secret history whilst walking home from work. that was an addictive read!

oftenpurple · 23/07/2010 12:42

My need to have a book within arm's length was one of my major reasons for getting a Kindle this year. Don't take it in the bath but usually have something light on the go for bath reading. I take my Kindle everywhere with me, even if we're just 'popping' out as you never know when the need might occur.

stegasaurus · 23/07/2010 15:20

I read anything anywhere. I always have at least 2 books on the go. I have one by my bed which I read at bedtime/ in bed, and one in my work bag which I read on the bus/ in the car/ during my breaks at work/ when there's nothing on TV/ anywhere else. My husband reads New Scientist magazines in the bathroom so I read interesting articles in there rather than having a seperate bathroom book. I always take a book with me whenever I leave the house just in case.
