Having Lee Child withdrawal symptoms - help!

So I discovered Lee Child (Jack Reacher novels) by accident a couple of months ago and love them - have now read them all and am desperately looking for a replacement!

I know they're trashy but alongside my more worthy reading (obviously...) I do like a good pacey thriller - can anyone recommend anything Lee Child-ish? In the meantime I'm sadly counting down for his next one due out in September...

Oh bookmarkign this thread. I had a fantastic birthday this year as DH bought me 61 hours without me having to tell him it was out and I was still waiting for it from the library, and then a few days later I found Gone Tomorrow ina charity shop for 50p when I hadn't been able to order that either, awesome.

Making a note of all these others for summer reading fixes.

they're not trashy!!! Wash your mouth out with soap you terrible woman!!

I bloody love Lee Child's books; Reacher is just swoonsome.

IMO there's not much directly comparable to Child/Reacher (my friend cocolepew would agree!) but other thriller authors I like are:

Harlen Coben (esp the Myron Bolitar books)
Kathy Reichs
Robert Crais
Dennis Lehane
Mark Billingham
Jonathan Kellerman
Patricia Cornwell (but only her first half dozen books, before she went crap)
Janet Evanovich (not remotely like LC but hilarious)
Linda Fairstein
Jeffrey Deaver

(and don't laugh but I actually really like Dick Francis' books)

ooh great ..just on my last Jack Reacher and was trying to make it last ..but now I know there is something else out there!!

mumtoabeautifulbabyboy · 21/07/2010 22:37

Oooooooo, I actually like Dick Francis too (As an English literature graduate hides head in shame!).

Will keep recommending John Lescroart and the Dismas Hardy books as a great read.

Am off to Amazon to read reviews/order some of the books suggested on this thread.

LadyPeterWimsey · 21/07/2010 23:06

I think I have read every Dick Francis book - and own most of them. I love them, even though they all have basically the same plot and the same main character. The very essence of formulaic - but it works!

I'm thinking of changing my name to Mrs Jack Reacher, btw.

The stephanie plum books by janet evanovich are funny. The Charlie fox books by Zoe Sharp are gripping, in order Killer Instinct, Riot Act, Hard Knocks, First Drop, Road Kill, Second Shot, Third Strike and her most recent Fourth Day. I highly recommend these.

I love Dick Francis too! And Harlan Coben - definitely agree on the Myron Bolitar ones.

I agree with you Sidge about Patricia Cornwell's first few being great and then downhill after that. I think the same about Elizabeth George - I used to love her books.

Have you read 61 Hours, the latest Lee Child? I have it as an eBook if you want me to email it to you.

Have you read J.A. Jance, the JP Beaumont series?

Or the Alphabet series by Sue Grafton? (A is for Alibi etc)

Tony Hillerman? Detective novels set on the huge Navajo Reservation in the American Southwest. Love them.

Brother Cadfael books? Medieval whodunnits.

JD Roob's "In Death" series.

redandgreen · 26/07/2010 09:48

Try Ian Fleming. James Bond is still the original hard man. So much cooler than Jack (not quite as easy to read, but short and gripping).

Monkeytoo · 27/07/2010 21:16

Oh yeah - the Sue Grafton books are great - I love those too.

dillyboo · 29/07/2010 17:34

I've only just found Lee Child/Jack Reacher books and am hooked after reading only 2 of them.
Have been trawling my local charity shops and i'm now a regular at my local library as a result.

I always look out for new books from Christopher Brookmyre, crime but with a comedy angle, so well written imho!

tillyfernackerpants · 29/07/2010 17:53

Robert Crais - the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike books, they're my favourites!

Harlan Coben - Myron Bolitar series, his stand alone books are good as well.

Jonathan Kellerman - Alex Delaware though these are a bit more serious & a bit more graphic

Hope they help with the waiting

bamboobutton · 29/07/2010 18:33

i found Andy McNab a good replacement.

the nick stone series is less cheezy than jack reacher, that 'men want to be him, women want to be with him' made me cringe.

DottyDot · 31/07/2010 13:19

Well I've just collected another 3 Robert Crais books from the library - is definitely getting me through Reacher withdrawal..!
