WW bankruptcy?

10 replies

Foostit · 15/04/2025 20:45

I just wondered what others are thinking about WW going bankrupt. I was set to rejoin but am going to wait to see what happens. Social media is full of apparently reassuring posts saying that WW isn’t going anywhere but I’m not overly convinced. I mean they’re not likely to give warnings as the leaders will all leave and members will stop paying making their situation worse. 🤔

I think they’re going bankrupt. My leader is also making statements saying they’re going nowhere but I don’t think ww are being honest with their staff

I’ve read about this on another site. It said they are currently filing for bankruptcy in the US. People using injections and the influx of online weight loss programmes has made the numbers using WW plummet.

@ItsStillWork
This is my fear as well. They’re not likely to be honest with staff given the circumstances. Staff are probably being told that they have to convince us too. I’m very sceptical. 🫤

@cramptramp They definitely are filing for bankruptcy in the US. I saw this posted by a leader on a local WW page. They also seem to be pushing the ‘WW is going nowhere’ narrative too. Apparently they are massively in debt and there’s no way weight loss jabs hasn’t had an impact. I can’t see companies queuing up to step in to help!

’going nowhere’ isn’t the most positive and reassuring slogan in any case! It came up on my Facebook feed, and my first thought was that a competitor was saying they were ineffective.

I think they are writing off debt including historic debt to restructure their balance sheet

So it’s not like they are becoming insolvent or being liquidated

Will make money selling WL injections. The original WW concept is dying on its arse and won’t recover.

I’m not too surprised. I valued the in person meetings when I lost weight with them. I needed after Covid but there no meeting near me at all and the online stuff wasn’t helpful.
There are likely better online tools. Also sick of them changing the plans all the time.

Thanks for the replies, I think enough time has passed for me to sign up again and see what happens. It does look like just a restructure.
@UName38
Totally agree! It was the same for me after Covid, only one meeting anywhere close by and it was on a weekday morning! I’ve since moved to a different area and there’s a choice of 4 now. I know what you mean about them constantly changing the plan. The pro points was the one that really worked for me. I have ignored the other ones since to be honest and just stuck to that one! Someone in my class told me about an app which works on the same formula so I use that one instead but go to classes to weigh. I always dread the coach asking what plan I’m following though as I’m a terrible liar! 🤦‍♀️😂 The worst was the one a few years ago that was a bit like slimming world. I gained weight on that one and that’s why I went back to the pro points. At the end of the day, if we are paying, turning up and losing weight then I suppose they don’t mind what plan we are following as long as we don’t broadcast it. Just wish I had the discipline to do it myself but I definitely need the accountability of the WW scales!

This according to Ai The company that owns WeightWatchers, WW International, Inc., is not currently going bankrupt, but its parent company did recently undergo a financial restructuring process in the United States.

Here are the key facts regarding the financial situation and its impact on the UK:

  • US Bankruptcy Filing for Restructuring: In May 2025, WW International filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US. This was a strategic financial move to allow the company to restructure and significantly reduce its debt by approximately $1.15 billion (£840 million).
  • Emergence from Bankruptcy: The company successfully emerged from bankruptcy shortly after, in June/July 2025, with a "renewed financial strength" and a new plan for long-term growth.
  • Operations Continued Uninterrupted: Throughout the bankruptcy and restructuring process, the company stated that its operations, including services for its millions of members worldwide (which includes the UK), continued without interruption. The company explicitly confirmed it was "fully operational" and "here to stay."
  • Shift in Strategy (including for the UK): The financial issues were largely attributed to a decline in its traditional weight-loss programs due to the rising popularity of weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. In response, WeightWatchers has pivoted its business model to integrate these medical solutions with its traditional lifestyle and community support.
  • In the UK, WeightWatchers has partnered with an anti-obesity drugs provider to offer its lifestyle and diet support app to patients who are taking prescription weight-loss medication.
  • The company is also launching new programs, such as one to support women through menopause.
In summary, the financial action taken was a major debt restructuring by the parent company in the US court system, which has now concluded. WeightWatchers UK is not going bankrupt, and the company is moving forward with a transformed business model.
