Ok, so I've been on Slimming World for about 6 weeks. I started it online and then started going to the class

At the first weigh-in I was horrified to weigh more than 7 lbs more than my scales at home weighed me as!

Anyway, I have been following it almost to the letter, I tend to use my syns for things like low fat dressings and stuff like that rather than proper treats, and I usually use about 6 - 10 a day

A typical day is like this:

sultana bran/ muller light/ chopped fruit for b'fast

jacket potato/salad/tuna (no mayo) for lunch

snack of fruit, carrots, just good things

dinner will be a recipe from the SW book, like chicken tikka, chilli, egg fried rice, generally 'free' or 1/2 syn

i sometimes have a mug shot during the day

in the evening I'm sitting eating cherries or grapes with a cup of herbal tea

last night I had 2 glasses of white wine and soda, but will only do this once a week

I truly am eating NO crap whatsoever

At my last weigh in I had GAINED 1.5lb

WTF am I doing wrong?

SW is not the first thing I've done, I've been on WW, tried low carbing - heard great things about SW so went in all guns blazing, and am now feeling totally unmotivated

Am genuinely starting to think maybe I have an underactive thyroid

I need to lose 2 stone. It's just not happening.

Help, please

I've not done it for a few years now, so might be a bit out of date but....

are you eating enough? are you drinking enough water?

I found I lost the most each week when I stuffed myself silly on free food!

Did you lose according to your scales in the 6 weeks you did it at home?

Is your period due / just starting?

Try not to lose heart based on one week's weigh in. For the first week on SW there is normally a bigger than normal loss, but if you've been follwing the plan at home already you might havehad that lose at home already IYSWIM. If you stick at it you should see a better loss next week

Oh and if it were me I'd be using my syns on something fun - chocolate or ice cream! use them or you'll start to feel deprived and be more likely to fall off the wagon

good luck

Alouiseg · 26/06/2010 09:35

I think you would be better doing the red days and eat fewer carbs.

I'd put on half stone if I ate like that. I think some people are carbohydrate metabolic and you and I are protein metabolic.

cyb · 26/06/2010 09:38

cut your quantities IN HALF

you will be amazed what you can eat and feel satisfied

we all eat huge portions

FWIW I would cut out the jacket spud and just have tuna salad

2 hot meals a day too much IMO

fustyarse · 26/06/2010 09:39

thanks

I do feel it's very carby but apparently it's all allowed

will have a look at the red days and try that

bumpybecky - for the first few weeks I seemed to lose about 3lbs but it comes back again

my period is due

fustyarse You have my sympathy. I put on half a stone doing SW.

I think Alouiseg is right and the red days might suit you more. Then again, I have a friend who is veggie and she's lost loads.(nearly 3 stone)

Weight watchers has worked for me and so has low-carbing in the short term. I think it is finding the diet that suits your body.

Good luck

morethanyoubargainfor · 26/06/2010 09:47

I to sympatise with you, i did SW a couple of years ago, I used to put on about the same that i had lost the previous week. I am veggie so only had the green days. No body could work it out but a year ago I was diagnosed with a severe wheat allergy! I have cut out all wheat/gluten and i have lost 3 stone since. That will be why SW doesn't work for me .

fustyarse · 26/06/2010 09:50

cyb - am not having massive portions, honest

everything i eat is healthy, tons of salad, raw veg, fruit

i'm being told to eat more but i'm honestly not hungry enough
could drink more water, i don't drink enough

everyone else at the group is losing tons - one woman lost 7.5lbs in her first week

I know how dissapointing it is not to be the one with the huge loss in the first week! the thing is though if she sat at home eating crisps and chocolate all day before SW then sticking to a sensible food plan can have dramatic losses at first

if your diet wasn't that bad to start with, small changes to your diet to fit with SW won't have such a dramatic impact

I think your period being due might well explain some if not all of your gain. There was one woman at my class who normally gained 3 or 4 pounds before her period. It all came off the following week though

Try drinking more water it really helps

fustyarse · 26/06/2010 11:50

thanks becky - yes she did say she'd simply stopped eating all the junk and that's why she'd lost so dramatically

you're right about my diet not being bad to begin with, I always eat pretty healthily so that could be contributing to my laxk of loss

today have had an apple, a banana, 42g all bran with skinned milk and chopped up srawberrie, and have made a pot of lentil soup with lean ham, carrot, onions and celery for lunch

have also drank lots of water and will really try to get into that habit

oh, for the days when I thought I was FAT if the scales said anything over 9 stone....

FairhairedandFrustrated · 26/06/2010 18:50

Fustyarse

Obviously you weren't eating pretty healthily to begin with if you have two stone to lose - not being a cow, just saying it like it is

Most of us try to convince oursevles we eat healthily, even when the evidence is staring us right in the face.

Right - if you food optimise 100% you will lose weight!!

The Sultana Bran (and I assume milk) are you weighing them out? Are you measuring your milk? Because although you may think the 250ml of SS milk is loads, when you have it measured out, it isn't actually a whole lot!

Try measuring your HE's every day for a week & see what happens...Also, if you're following EE, make sure your plate is 1/3 full of superfree foods!!

Good Luck

fustyarse · 27/06/2010 09:45

fairhaired - you're right - but I have had 3 dcs in the last 6 years too

however I think my weight problems probably began when I got married and started eating almost the same size portions as my dh - that hasn't helped!

he is VERY into healthy eating and never eats crap however - and despite eating mahoosive portions he is very lean

When I have cereal I have been having it with a muller light instead of milk - I save my milk (skimmed) as my healthy extra A (just use in tea, coffee)

however - I realised yesterday that I did need to measure my cereal out as I had been over-pouring - not by masses, but still too much

am going to reduce the amount of pasta etc I have and fill up my plate with salad, veg etc and see how that goes.

My consultant told me not too eat too many grapes or bananas. Some people will put on weight if eating too many of these. Apparently they are fine in moderation and are "free foods", but your weight loss will be helped by other fruit such as apples, oranges etc.

EricNorthmansmistress · 29/06/2010 08:41

Ok you might resent my views but SW, free food, grapes making you all fat, all far too complicated (and grapes cannot make you gain fat, they just can't, unless maybe you ate a truckload)

OP you certainly can eat healthily and be overweight. I am 2 stone over and eat healthily, I gained the weight while pregnant and eat well, just too much of it.

The woman who lost 7.5lbs in her first week probably didn't use the same scales did she? And a lot of it would have been water. Going from takeaways/alcohol/chocolate regularly to a healthy diet will cut a lot of water retention at first.

I suggest you try calorie counting. It's far more precise than SW which only seems to work for certain people, would never work for me, I could eat a ton of 'free' food and end up overeating on calories.

With calorie counting you get to decide what you want to eat, as long as it fits in your allowance. I have used this site to lose weight before, it's utterly brilliant and costs the same as SW. I highly recommend giving it a try. They have a free trial too so you can get a feel of whether you like it or not.

HumphreyCobbler · 29/06/2010 09:03

it is also possible that you DO have an underactive thyroid.

Do you have any of the symptoms? There is an online quiz you could get if you google.

Alouiseg · 30/06/2010 17:34

I'm not actually convinced that all calories are created equal. A calorie is a measurement of energy and I feel that our bodies are much more complex than ruler and calculator equations.

Just my opinion.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 01/07/2010 19:23

I agree that what you're eating is too carby.

I started doing the IPD and did it for 3 weeks religiously and lost 9 pounds. It didn't agree with my tummy so I re-introduced some carbs.

I now calorie count using food.focus.co.uk, but am still very aware of how many carbs I am eating. I try and keep it to around 80 grams a day, and have no rice/pasta/potatoes/bread after about 3/4pm. Today is the exception, I have eaten half a small pizza and am drinking a glass of red. But I am within my calories so that is fine as long as I'm not eating like this every day.

What are you doing in the way of exercise? I never really shift any weight unless I increase my activity level significantly.

Alouiseg · 01/07/2010 21:06

Hmmm, glass of red. I incorporate that into my lowish carb regime. The Harcombe woman says it's ok

1footinfront · 04/07/2010 21:25

Im looking at your daily menu, are you having the full amount of syns? If you dont have the full amount of syns you may well gain weight.

Also there does seem to be a lack of protein there, I try ( not always successful!) to have protein for breakfast eg eggs, bacon, ham, sometimes chicken.

I agree about the overkill of bananas as well but one a day is fine.

I do think the lack of syns should be contributing to this somewhat? Maybe you just didn't mention them?
