Changing food habits to overcome PMT

Has anyone tried this and did it work?

I have really shocking PMT and read that cutting out sugary food can help to reduce the symptoms.

I had dismissed the idea because I can't go a single day without sugar but I have been so awful the last couple of days I have to at least try to cut it out.

I just wondered if anyone has tried it or whether anyone would like to have a go with me?

Yes I cut out all sugar and processed food and made sure I ate only wholegrains. PMT vanished within two weeks. However I still had v heavy periods.

Thanks for the reply! Interesting to hear that it worked for you - and so quickly! I'm halfway through my AF and have been so grumpy for the last 3 days. I nearly lost my cool at ds' swimming lesson today with at least 4 people .

I can cope with the heavy periods - though mine don't seem as heavy and I don't get PP now I use a MC.

Did you meal plan or just make sure you ate no sugar/processed food? Also, did your family eat the same foods?

Ds and I quite often have brown rice/pasta/bread except when I'm feeling tight because it always seems so much more expensive in the supermarket. I'm just not very good at meal planning.

I have read that increasing dairy products can help hugely with this.

mogs0 · 14/06/2010 18:29

I thought dairy products might have the opposite effect. I drink loads of milk and eat quite a lot of cheese and yogurt too and had thought this might not be the best diet! I will have to go and do some research!!

I did the GI diet and my PMT was greatly reduced. I also get a lot of headaches and they were much less frequent. It will stop you craving sugar. I found I was eating a lot less and never feeling hungry or craving anything. It was like taking appetite suppressants as I had so little interest in food.
