I'm considering buying a workout dvd. Has anyone ever stuck at one of these things for more than a week?

If so, which one?

I've never even seen one before, I'm a complete beginner.

I've got all of Davina's. I've been doing them for years. They're brill.

TubbyDuffs · 02/06/2010 18:51

I've got Davina's, don't think I lasted a week!

Cadelaide · 02/06/2010 18:54

How often do you do it Sanctimonious?

(great name, btw )

In summer I go running mainly but 4 times a week I work out. If the weather's bad, I do a dvd.

She's done enough dvds that there's something there to suit you I'm sure. Easy versions of each bit and interval training which is quite good if you're just beginning.

Can you hire one from your local library to try it out?

Have a look at the 30 Day Shred thread, lots of success stories on there, and it's only 20 minutes long

Naetha · 02/06/2010 19:57

I've had more success with the 30 day shred than any other DVD.

ok, had a quick look at the thread.

So what d'you do when the 30 days is up then, just keep doing it at the hardest level?

hmmm.

Looked at the amazon reviews, it might be a bit serious for me iyswim. The word "bulking" cropped up somewhere.

I need some cardio and some stretching i think.

ministry of sound-pump it up areoburn. brilliant and will shed the pounds v quickly, before pg was doing it 3-4 times a week, every week.

Cadelaide · 02/06/2010 23:51

ooooh, now that sounds good.

You will not get bulky I promise, women are simply not designed to build muscle easily. The women in the dvd have a lot of muscle definition but that is due to very low body fat so you can see all the muscles, plus they obviously did not get those bodies just by doing a 20 minute workout every day with light weights! Using weights in circuit type intervals means that not only do you raise your heart rate (as you do in a cardio workout) but you also begin to build lean muscle which will increase your metabolism. It is also shown that you burn more calories for longer after you have finished working out when you use weights as opposed to just doing cardio. If you are worried about getting 'bulky' look at the inches people have lost on the other thread.

The main reason I think it is so easy to stick with though is the fact that it is so short. Rather than thinking that you have to slog it out for an hour and thinking you can't be bothered, you know it is only 20 minutes and by the time you want to quite you're nearly finished.

Ineedsomesleep · 03/06/2010 07:26

If you think you will get bored, why not borrow it from the library first.

I don't use a dvd but have got EA Active for the wii, which is fine for me.

bamboobutton · 03/06/2010 07:36

avoid anything by Nell McAndrews if you are very unfit.
just 5 mins of the warm-up almost killed me and i was a real gym bunny before i has ds.

30 day shred looks interesting so i might try that when i've recovered from having baby.

Joby1970 · 03/06/2010 08:15

I never stuck @ a DVD until I joined the Cult of the Shred. It works & is fast - go for it.

Cadelaide · 03/06/2010 12:12

OK, shred it is then.

I have bought a fair few exercises DVD's in my time. But the one I always go back to and get results from is a Weight Watchers one with Claire Sweeney. I think it's a case of getting to know the routine. Once you have that established your well on your way!

Miggsie · 03/06/2010 17:00

I've been doing Karen Voight work outs for over 10 years.

She generally releases one a year so there is always a new one coming along.

DramaInPyjamas · 03/06/2010 17:14

I have loads of the celeb ones.. (Coleen Rooney, Jordan, Helen Adams, Geri Yoga, etc..)All bought from charity shops, so didn't cost much.

Nell McAndrews (I lasted 5 minutes before I donated it back to the shop! As bamboobutton said, you need to be very, very fit to keep up!

But the Davina ones are the ones I have stuck to throughout the years.

redredruby · 03/06/2010 22:07

The firm........they do a range of dvds and (in my opinion) are fantastic. There is a huge choice but my favourite are those which combine cardio with toning such as 'get chisled' and 'total body time crunch' - love them and so effective.

twinkle183 · 04/06/2010 11:47

Avoid Hannah Waterman if your unfit also it kills you in the first couple of mins!!!

Another 30 day shredder here.. also I go for 3 mile runs/walks depending on how i am feeling!!!

forehead · 04/06/2010 17:53

Tae Bo by Billy Blanks.
Tough, but effective.
