Weight loss chat

A space to talk openly about weight loss journeys and challenges. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

Just interested what dieters think of this thread about a fat CM in AIBU:

Some of the attitudes towards overweight people on here are pretty grim IMO. Any thoughts?

not read the whole thread but get the jist of it

i'm 4 stone overweight....half a stone has gone, feel better for it too. BUT,i know my fitness is bad,i feel 'heavy' and can't move as fast as this time last year, when i was target weight. my joints ache a bit too!!

ii would be a better child carer if the weight was gone,i know this because i used to do so much more when slimmer

Babyball - you have unwittingly broken an unwritten Mumsnet "rule" about not starting threads about other threads. I don't think you will get many constructive responses. That thread has been in active conversations for a day or two now so I think any Mumsnetter who is interested in dieting/weight issues/fat prejudice has had the opportunity to comment on the thread itself.

msboogie · 15/05/2010 15:31

I'd like to meet the childminder that would manage to overfeed my son!

babyball · 15/05/2010 15:33

bibbitybobbityhat Apologies for breaking the "rules". Have seen others do this as well as being a bit of a noob so hope you can forgive me . Just thought it was interesting to see others' comments who are actually dieting and struggling with weightloss.

Put your away babyball. I was trying to warn you in advance that you might get some snipey comments, as I cannot stand seeing noobs being torn off a strip for going against Mumsnet conventions. And I, personally, have never agreed with the "no threads about a thread" rule and have a long posting history saying just that.

What I cannot stand is people getting hold of the wrong end of the stick and immediately going on the attack.

babyball · 15/05/2010 15:42

That was by no means an attack! Sorry if that's the way you saw it...

I can't actually see anyone saying that the problem is the CM's weight though, more that the issue is that her children are also overweight, which is a valid concern I think.
But people keep ignoring this and piling in to defend an imaginary fattist attitude.

LisaD1 · 15/05/2010 17:27

Well, I replied on that thread and I AM an overweight CM! I think most people, myself included, did not so much have a problem with the CM being overweight but that her children were too. Parents are paying CM's to look after their child, we are supposed to encourage healthy eating, some of us can do that for the children (regardless of our own size) and some can't. Clearly, the CM with the overweight children struggles to encourage healthy eating so why would you want to place your child in that environment when there are plenty of other options?

GettinTrimmer · 15/05/2010 19:29

Many of the posts raised questions about if the CM would notice if the children were snacking as it was so part and parcel of her lifestyle, used food as a distraction, put the children in front of the telly, etc, etc.

May or may not be true.

Could have been worded more sensitively by some posters, but I think alot of people who have never had weight issues wouldn't think about it.

One poster suggested further investigations by asking other parents who've had children there, asking the CM questions about nutrition, seems fair rather than deciding against her on the basis of appearance.
