I hope this is the right forum? What can I eat that is as filling as peanut butter?

Apologies if this is the wrong place, I have looked and not seen a more suitable place to post it!

I'm trying to watch what I eat so I can lose a few lbs for summer. It's going well so far, but I have problems with my blood sugar levels and find that I need to have a snack at about 3.30pm, otherwise I get the shakes before dinner. I've realised that rice cakes with peanut butter, or pb on brown toast fills me up more than enough so I can hang on until dinner, but I've noticed lately that I've been eating it every day which probably isn't the best idea.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can replace it with, please? I need something quick & easy really as I'm usually running around after the school run, and I don't really want anything too big or else I don't feel hungry at dinner, then wake up hungry in the night!

I tried a banana today, but I was still shaky after eating it. I have small bags of nuts and fruit, but they probably have more calories in than the peanut butter...

Thanks if you can help.

something that will not give you a sugar spike like a few small cubes of cheese might be better

MrsMeow · 11/05/2010 21:22

Thanks BALD, cheese would be good, and easy enough to sort out. Maybe cheese and a rice cake or something.

Thanks

rice cakes and houmous, a handful of sunflower & pumpkin seeds mixed together with dried cranberries, nuts might be calorific but are packed with goodness, I usually have about 10-15 almonds and find that this stops me from reaching for the biscuit tin, brazil nuts are also very good for you, how about a smoothie with your favourite fruit, you could add some oats to bulk it out.

CoupleofKooks · 11/05/2010 21:34

i think eating nuts every day is fine, and very healthy, but you'd be better off varying the types rather than just having peanuts
nuts do contain a lot of fat, but they are healthy fats, and as you have noticed, satiate you and fill you up for a long time

I find three or four brazil nuts with a couple dried apricots really satisfying and filling.

< feels dull >

Thanks very much for the suggestions everyone - I hadn't really thought about dried fruit so will get some of that, and some nuts as well. I was trying to steer away from them because of the calories, but obviously they're better than say, the couple of biscuits I used to stuff instead!

Almond butter is yummy. I'm an addict! As far as I know it is better for cholesterol. Peanut butter seems to have more 'transfats'

BobtheWoodmouse · 12/05/2010 11:38

Love peanut butter - very calorific though, I tried weighing a blob the other day and was shocked to see how little weighs 50g.

Maybe try Laughing Cow extra light (look for the purple packaging) cheese triangles - they are 20 cals each, bit of an acquired taste - over-processed etc but will give you a bit of protein which might help with the hunger pangs, I like them on oatcakes. The portion control is already done for you and if you scoff the whole 8 triangles, that's still fewer cals than 50g of p'nut butter, just about.

MrsMeow · 12/05/2010 12:43

BobtheWoodmouse me too! Only the crunchy one though, and it has to be Sunpat!

Thanks, I know the Laughing Cow ones that you mean, didn't think about trying those. I'm partial to a bit of cheese spread as well Oatcakes are something that I've tried to like, but just can't for some reason. I don't know what it is! I can have it on crispbread or rice cakes though.

Again almond butter sounds really nice! I don't think I've ever seen it in the shops though, would it be health food shops I'd find it in?

Yes - plus lots of others such as cashew, hazel, macadamia. All delish.
Could you stomach low fat cottage cheese on a rice cake? I can't stand the cold sliminess myself, but some folks seem to find it edible.

MrsMeow · 13/05/2010 13:19

Yum yum, thanks OurLady, I shall look tomorrow in town

I actually don't mind cottage cheese. Only the pineapple one though, the normal one just tastes like off milk to me!
