Has anyone heard of or used it?
A friend of mine swears by it. Here's the website
it's supposed it suppress your appetite, hence making dieting easier
I'm doing weight watchers but I'm hungry all the time.
what do you think? It's £20 a bottle

I've not heard of it I'm afraid but if you are hungry all the time then you need to make changes in your diet rather than depending on expensive pills which contain god knows what. Are you eating enough protein and good carbs and eating regularly throughout the day? If your body is telling you it is hungry then it needs fuel, not a pill.

Crazycatlady · 31/03/2010 14:26

l-carnitine is very efficient at mobilising fat cells so that the body can more effectively make use of them for energy during exercise. WIthout exercise and a good diet, it won't do much for you, but the combination of all three is very powerful.

Carnitine is found in foods - red meat particularly, and naturally in the human body, but there is significant evidence to show that taking a supplement speeds up fat loss.

No need to buy the expensive liquid stuff - the capsules you can buy in any health food shop are just as good.

Don't waste your money on the expensive carnitine complex made by Solgar either - (the complex includes two other types of carnitine that do other things not relevant to weight loss). Plain old l-carnitine will do.

It's just about the only supplement that PT's recommend for fat loss.

Crazycatlady · 31/03/2010 14:28

p.s. l-carnitine won't make any difference to your appetite. Eat every four hours and concentrate on protein and complex carbohydrate, supplemented with good fats (olive oil etc).

Protein such as oily fish will keep you fuller, longer. Wild Alaskan salmon is wonderful for this.

Eating more regularly, and dropping sugar from your diet, will regulate your insulin levels so you won't feel that desperate hunger.

Thanks for that. I'm eating enough, and good healthy food too, but struggling to lose the last 7lbs. I'm on 22 points a day on WW.
A normal healthy diet is no good for me as I'm a greedy cow even for very low GI healthy foods. I just needed a bit if a push which is why I'm on WW. I just want rid of this feeling hungry, which I know is in my mind. I find it hard to stop eating once I start.

Probably a stupid idea, but have you tried chewing gum as soon as you have finished your meal, or for those times when you want to eat something but aren't actually hungry (does that make sense??, that could just be me!). I find if I have chewing gum when I have finished eating my meal then it takes away the craving to keep eating, even though I know I am full.

justallovertheplace · 31/03/2010 14:51

Are you drinking enough? And do you absolutely have to lose any extra weight? I would be concerned that if you are constantly hungry then you are not eating enough, or you are eating the wrong things, which in turn is giving you cravings. And what will happen when you have lost the weight? Do you think you can keep it off if you are always going to be hungry?

FrazzleRock · 31/03/2010 15:50

I drink lots. Always carry a 75cl or a 1ltr water bottle with me. I make sure I drink one before brekkie, and one before lunch and whatever I can get down me before supper. It's mainly an attempt to fool my stomach into thinking it's full. Coffee is quite good as a snacking substitute but not really ideal!

I'll still be much within my ideal weight if I lose another 7lbs. Another friend of mine is exactly the same height and build as me and she has lost lots of weight and still looks great so she is my goal!

I'd not bother with the l-carnitine if it's just a hunger issue as it won't help with that. It will help mobilise fat cells but only if you are eating a good diet (with enough calories) and exercising.

What will help get rid of the hunger is eating more oily fish as it really does stave off hunger - but weightwatchers is pretty harsh points wise on these as it's a simplistic diet programme which does not distinguish between good fats and bad, or between those foods will provide your body with fuel and satisfy your hunger versus the foods that are empty calories.

If you're genuinely happy with weightwatchers (and the associated hunger which is unavoidable on this plan) I'd say you're just going to have to live with the hunger until you reach your goal, otherwise a diet higher in good quality fish protein is the key to removing that hideous hunger once and for all and for enabling your body to build lean muscle mass so it becomes more efficient at utilising the calories you eat.

LostGirl · 01/04/2010 07:45

It sounds like you are genuinely hungry all the time so chances are you are not going to be able to keep this diet up, and it sounds like your body needs more food. I agree with crazycatlady, I know nothing about weightwatchers but agree with everything crazycatlady says about eating more fish and protein. Also, try not to compare yourself with your friend, everybody is different, is it really worth being the same weight as her if you are starving and thinking about food all the time?

FrazzleRock · 01/04/2010 08:22

But I don't think I'm actually hungry. I know it's in my mind as I always used to have such large portions. Now I have 'normal' portions and I eat as healthily as I can. Wholemeal granary bread (even though higher points), fruit and low GI snacks. Porridge/no sugar muesli for brekkie, beany soups for lunch and a good dinner - ie, spag bol with wholemeal pasta and loads of veg. There is no reason for me to be hungry.
I just greedy!

Do you eat your fruit for snacks? If so, make sure you also eat some protein with it, a couple of slices of lean meat as it will make you feel fuller for longer. If you are not hungry and it is just in your mind then I found the chewing gum really worked for me, I used it all the time for the first month but don't really need it anymore, it just helped me break the habit. But, if you stomach is growling with hunger then you need to eat something trying to combine carbs with protein. Do you eat regularly throughout the day? I eat pretty much every three hours, even if I am not hungry and it has really balanced out my energy levels.

LostGirl · 01/04/2010 08:31

Sorry, nothing new in that post at all, it sounds like you are eating well, just make sure you are eating enough, and remember that the closer you get to your goal weight, the slower the weight is going to come off, if you weigh yourself, try doing it once a month instead of every week.

Alouiseg · 01/04/2010 08:37

Weightwatchers is dangerous territory. Any diet which makes a piece of smoked mackerel 10 points should be outlawed. They are relying on you buying all their processed junk.

Eat meat, fish, vegetables and olive oil in abundance. Eat 2 eggs a day, Keep bread to wholegrain and 1 slice a day. It costs you nothing extra and you will be healthier than you've ever been. Just avoid the processed crap.

Think about the nutrition that your body needs rather than what WW allows you. How can they make cakes full of chemicals and tell us that they are "allowed".

Rant over, WW is my pet hate (well one of them)

FrazzleRock · 01/04/2010 10:50

Alouiseg - I've tried all that. I always follow a GI diet so know a lot about nutrition I just needed a shove in the right direction as I wasn't losing any weight. Although I felt very healthy.
I'm now following WW and trying my best to incorporate GI as it has worked so well for a few people I know who also didn't have much to lose.
I don't buy any of the WW stuff and I haven't signed up with them either, I have a magic app on my phone so I can find out points in everything

It really is all in my mind as a don't get a rumbly tummy.
Chewing gum does help actually but wanted to try these drops I was talking about as a friend thinks they are wonderful.
I just wasn't sure what they were exactly, the website doesn't seem to explain clearly.
