A couple of days isn't a plateau it's a 'pause'.... Body-weight can be up or down 2lbs on any given day, usually for reasons of hydration. And that's why it's misleading to weigh daily. Check you're getting enough calories because losing weight too rapidly is not necessarily a good thing. Otherwise don't change your food choices and stay off the scales for a week.

Toots · 16/03/2010 10:19

Don't know! Exactly the same with me. 9 pounds in three weeks then nothing for a week. A pound in last few days. I am sticking to low carb and exercising 3x per week.

nappyaddict · 16/03/2010 12:41

How does hydration affect your weight then?

bishboschone · 16/03/2010 13:29

thank you chilli, I know loosing too quickly isnt good . I would rather lose 2 lbs weekly but I am not keen on the scales not moving. I will take you advice and weigh in on Friday

Toots Were you on your period the week you didn't lose? I find that affects my weight loss and it is the reason I now only weight myself fortnightly.

ShowOfHands · 16/03/2010 15:24

Using the scales as the only gauge of how you are improving is misleading. What about how you feel, how much energy you have, how your clothes fit etc. Weight loss of more than 2lbs a week isn't a fat loss but a loss of lean tissue anyway so it's not desirable or sustainable. And since muscle weighs more than fat you also would expect that a lot of exercising will balance out weight loss with muscle gain at some point.

Step away from the scales for a few days and stop using them as the only measure of achievement.

I mean all this kindly. You're doing fabulously to be committing to changing something you're unhappy about. Don't let one thing convince you it's not working.

Hydration levels affect weight because of fluid retention. If someone is dehydrated their body is likely to hang on to fluid.... so they weigh more. If someone is well-hydrated their body doesn't hang on to fluid... so they weigh less.

It's part of why you can have a few glasses of wine one night and wake up the next day 3 or 4lbs heavier... not due to the calories in the wine but due to the dehydrating effects of alcohol.

It's also why it makes sense at the same time as counting calories or WW points to get as much salt & sugar out of your diet as possible and switch to more fresh wholefoods. Salt and sugar (which is in ready-made food in spades) dehydrate the body so you will weigh more if you have a salty/sugary diet.

I've been trying to aim for 3 litres of water a day and I did notice the first week I did it I lost quite a lot of weight.

mummymels · 19/03/2010 03:13

I think you need to look at it over a longer time period. If it's ony recently you have plateaud you may start losing again.

I have been on Go Lower which is low carb since October. I lost loads of weight then I stayed the same for a couple of weeks and now the last couple of weeks I have started losing again although the weight loss is slowing down the nearer I get to goal.

nappyaddict · 22/03/2010 01:18

mummymels How many weeks in a row did you stay the same? Could you see a reason for why you might have stayed the same (for me it's usually my period or cos I've not been 100% good eating wise that week)

One thing I will say which is where I've gone wrong in the past, is just cos you don't lose for a few weeks don't lose your motivation and give up on the diet and think it's not for you. These things happen and in time you will start losing again. Dieting is a bit like surfing, sometimes you just have to wait and catch the next wave, whether it be motivation, waiting for your body to catch up with all the good work you've been putting in or until you can concentrate more on what you are eating perhaps cos of other important things going on in your life.
