Hi ladies,
I've a baby that's EBF and been weaning since 4m - she's 5m old tomorrow.

Since she was born Ive been dieting - WW did for4wks, put on 3lb, lost it, put it on again, tried cutting down, Hypoxi, exercise alot and watch what I eat, now doing slimfast -

Jist of it, I'm 12st9 and was 10st10 before, I keep getting to 12st6 and it will NOT budge any lower, then creeps up again, almost like my body is clinging to the fat.

Im so upset. One doc said this does happen and I may aswell eat more to make the most of it, another said its a myth and he'll give me orlistat after.

Is it a myth? I am not deluded- I am really watching what I eat and exercise 30m aerobic or 2hr walk every single day. Fiance and MIL cant believe Ive lost nothing

I think I always lost more weight once I finished bf. I have no science at all, but it's not beyond reason that a body that knows it's feeding another will 'cling to fat' to assist that process.

I never lost weight bfing any of mine and I had 3 greedy guzzlers, sorry

Dieting whilst breastfeeding? How? It affects my supply if I do not eat well.

By 12 months after birth I found my weight had reduced sufficiently for me to be happy. It was when I gave up BF that the final bit came off. But don't even think about stopping now I've told you that!

Try and relax IMO this is the time to eat cake when BF. Are your Fiance and MIL making comments then about your weight then

Has the GP checked there's no other reason- hormonal, thyroid etc?

I couldn't lose weight when dd was little. She too was ebf and I ran, cycled, ate healthily etc and it just sat there. It was only when she was over a year and reduced feeds that I managed to start losing the weight. In fact, the less she feeds, the easier I find it. She's 2.10 now and I'm back to my usual weight and fitter than ever.

It takes about a year for a body to get back to its pre-pregnancy shape. It's also normal to plateau for a few weeks/months and then start losing more.
May I say that you should not diet when bf. Not stuffing yourself with chocolate-fine, but any serious dieting has to wait. Unhealthy for you and for the baby- rapid weight loss causes ketones (toxines in fat) being released, into bm as well.
Just relax and I bet in 6 months you will be much lighter.

Not advised to diet whilst BF.

I never lost weight BF nor has anyone I have spoken about it to. I think it is a myth.

If you have chosen to BF, you will have to tell your MIL and fiance that your DC comes before you being swelt.

Your GP sounds a bit prescription happy
Slim fast is madness anyway, no meal replacement diet is going to be sustainable in the long term.
I have put on huge amounts of weight with both dc (4 stone ) Not a pound of it budged when I was feeding. It all came off and then some when I stopped feeding. It is rotten to feel bigger than you want to be, but to me, feeding was more important. If I were you, I'd stop worrying and enjoy it while your baby is so tiny. You have plenty of time to lose weight when you stop feeding.

gorionine · 13/03/2010 21:19

I am not sure it was prescribed by GP, justal;lovertheplace.

gorionine · 13/03/2010 21:20

justallovertheplace, sorry, I just killed your name

justallovertheplace · 13/03/2010 21:24

No no I know it wasn't, but the promise of a dose of orlistat to a new mother who is still bf is still to me. 2 stone of baby weight really isn't that much in the grand scheme of things, and not a situation I'd want to take pills for.

GoldenSnitch · 13/03/2010 21:34

I didn't lose any weight till after I stopped feeding DS. Will probably mean I'm going to end up fat on holiday this year as DD will only be 7 months when we go and I'm not stopping just to lose weight. I feel like a blimp but it won't be forever and then I'll have done the best for both of us.
