Hi everyone in diet, this is my first post here, its nice to have a change of scene. I have started a calorie-controlled diet today and wondered if anyone knew the calorific value of wine? I drink rich gutsy reds and dont want to have to forgo a couple of glasses even though I am doing the d-word. And does it matter what colour and type of wine you drink? eg how does a light liebfraumilch compare to a luscious shiraz? Thanks all.

No problem - see, if you go without food you can drink more

For what it's worth... have a go at not drinking any wine at all for just a week to get you started. Alcohol, unfortunately, is more than just 'calories'. It has negative effects on fluid retention and on the way the body metabolises fat. So even if you count the calories religiously you can get some disappointing results if you drink more than, say, a couple of glasses a week.

If you go without for a week and find other things to drink with a meal and other ways to relax then you'll get off to a great start with your weight-loss and out of the habit that - let's be honest - might have contributed to you being overweight in the first place. You'll also appreciate wine for what it is... an occasional treat.
