bargainhuntingbetty · 01/03/2010 10:34

Am currently the heaviest I have EVER been. Have PCOS and the coil. I go to the gym 3 times a week and walk miles with the dogs but the weight seems to be going up. I am on a serious downer about it now and I have a wedding to go to in May. PLEASE HELP.

i have pcos and coil too.

have lost 2stone with lighter life lite.
very very happy about it. i found it quite easy especially when it came of quickly to start with.

low carb diet seems to suit me with the pcos (insulin resistance or something)
anyway would recommend,
and ive not put any back on either. now eating sensible and exercising and have kept it off,

Lighter life lite?? Do you need to pay for that?? Is it meal replacements etc?? Low carb too, one of my mistakes I guess is I always eat pasta when I am trying to lose weight but that must be a bad thing for pcos?? Thanks for replying

you do pay for lighter life and you have to be more than 2st overweight I think!

It is actually good if you can afford it- something like £50pw but I guess you are getting ALL your food for that and it is all planned and prepared and healthy etc plus you will lose weight. I think they also team you with a counsellor to try to deal with any why you are overweight and tackle any food related issues to be able to get you back to eating a normal healthy diet when you have lost the weight.

I cant afford that . Goit myself all excited there. Have seen dieticians etc but the damn weight will NOT shift. Am really getting myself dishartened now.

my friend has pcos and always blamed it for her weight gain and couldnt get pregnant

but she had huge portions

she did ww, to check portion size, lost 2stone and is now a mummy to a 3yr

Have they tried you on metformin yet for the PCOS. I was given that when i was ttc - I was very overweight due to the PCOS and it did help me lose weight but I had to diet like buggery as well. The consultant told me that women with PCOS put on weight more easily and lose it more slowly but that the metformin helped to level a little.
I think with PCOS you have to accept you can't do the same diet as normal people and lose weight. When I did weight watchers I only lost weight if I didn't use all the points ( ie non of the treats).

I know how horrible it is. I got on the scales this morning 18 months after my ds was born to discover I have put all the weight back on I spent years taking off. I don't know how I've put so much on. I thought I was being reasonably good. However I have been off the metformin since I got pregnant. I could cry.

May be like me you just end up eating too much without realising it. A portion of pasta should just be 1.5 ozs (dried pasta). It's not much but you get used to it.

Good luck.

I'd like to suggest you get hold of a book by Jennie Brand-Miller called 'The Low GI Guide to Managing PCOS'. PCOS being a condition that typically goes hand in hand with insulin resistance means that it's not enough to eat 'less' you've also got to eat 'differently' if it's to be effective.

It's not low-carb but rather smart carb. Meaning that you replace the simple starches and sugars in your diet with more complex carbohydrates, vegetables and whole grains. Instead of starchy white pasta you'd eat wholewheat pasta, for example.

To lose weight you then take your new diet and very carefully control the portions.... so instead of a big plateful of pasta with a little vegetable/meat sauce on the side you'd have a small portion of wholewheat pasta and vegetable/meat sauce with a lot of vegetables on the side.

Exercise will help keep your metabolism lively and burn up energy a little faster. But do read that book. I know a lot of people for whom it has been a life-saver.

Thank you all for the help. I will look into the book. Thanks
