I am terribly obese.
I am anti-depressives for tension/anxiety.
I am very unfit.

On the outside, I am larger than life, full of fun, always smiling.

I need to get out of this rut.
I need to make a start.
I have a family wedding in July. I will be mortified to be the gigantic relative in the photos. I know I cannot become a skinny mini by then but I need to try.

Help! Please?
How did you start? What motivated you?
I know what to do, I simply need to do it.

i am going on holiday with rhubarb - she is lovley and slim and i didn't wan't to be the fat friend. that was my initial motiator, however after the weight starts coming off and you feel you look better, that is a motivation in itself.

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/03/2010 11:34

Rhuidean - thats the weigh way to look at it

1 lb a week is just under 4 stone in a year

Joby1970 · 02/03/2010 13:15

hi, I weighed 2 & 1/2 stone more this time last year.
For the first 4 months of the year i followed slimming world using the magazines @ home.
In April I bought a Wii & started exercising with Wii Fit, by May I bought EA sports Active Personal Trainer. Moved onto Biggest loser Wii game in October & EA More Workouts @ Christmas. Just started doing Jillian Micheals 30 Day Shred (on day 15).
I have just tried eating well, wholemeal everything & skimmed milk. Also moved from normal tea to herbal tea (something I never thought I'd do!)

I found that it helped to write down goals I wanted to reach & why I wanted to lose weight & stick them up on the fridge. Helps as I reminder!

& trust me once you get going & people start noticing the difference thats all the motivation you need. x

Hi CheeryCherry

I was in the same position as you a few months back. I was at my heaviest ever and I couldn't stop eating. But I started a low carb diet called Go Lower back in October and amazed at how much I have lost. I've tried other diets before but have always found them hard to keep to because I always felt so hungry but on Go Lower I don't feel hungry at all. It's so easy to follow as well and you are even allowed treats on it. They send you ready meals so you don't even have to cook for yourself and they are healthy meals. So far I have lost 62lbs since October.

This was just what I needed to read today - am forty in a weeks time and can remember when i was thirty saying I was going to tackle my weight - I am 3 stones heavier so that's now 7 to lose !! I am totally ashamed of myself, can't bear to look in the mirror and today just feel like locking myself in the loo and having a good bawl. I don't think I will ever conquer it, I was very overweight as a child lost a lot at Uni before I got married (happy low stress times I think was the key) and have just got bigger and bigger as an adult. Last year I lost 2 stone with SW but got on the scales today and every pound gone back on. One of my "issues" is that my normal size parents I know don't like my size and every now and then little well meaning comments are made which i just don't need - it's like they think it hasn't dawned on me that I have a problem. My brother is a similar size so I just wonder what is going on there - I don't know if being told foods were bad and naughty as a child has just made me rebell and think stuff you but I do know I eat when I am sad, happy or angry and I just can't break the cycle - please someone offer me some motivation/guidance

SuSylvester · 11/03/2010 10:55

tbhcusty i cant belive you were ever 4 stone overweight - your fat pic you had on your profile didnt look that bad at all!
are oyu jsut very very slim now?

i think oprah has the right angle on this you need to lead your best life
and i too lurch twds 40 in weeks and am on a diet so i am not filled wiht regret for being ( only about a stone) overweight

that is how it creeps on - gradually.

whyme2 · 11/03/2010 11:14

I am currently doing the Johnson's upday and down day diet. It really suits me and after the first few days it is easy. I've lost nearly a stone over the last month. I've had quite a few slips as well although I do an exercise dvd 4 or 5 times a week as well.

The thing that finally motivated me ( I was about 4 stone overweight) was feeling so uncomfy in my clothes. I hated everything feeling so tight and the month after christmas was worse than ever. I couldn't face or afford to buy new clothes.

Disenchanted3 · 11/03/2010 11:16

Just updating from Jan 22nd, have now lost 16lbs

whyme2 · 11/03/2010 11:20

Another thing that really motivated me was seeing my dm in so much pain with her knees and back due to being very overweight all her adult life. She had a knee op over a year ago and although that is fine her back is so bad that she cannot walk more than 50yards with out needing to sit down. She is only just 60 and her life is so resticted already.

Just acknowledging this somehow made something shift in my brain and I knew I didn't want to be like that.

GordianKnot · 11/03/2010 11:24

well done d! bet you can feel it!

mummymels · 11/03/2010 21:42

traceyinrosso ? You sound as if you have lots of issues, not just the weight one. You don?t sound happy at all. Have you spoken to your family about how their comments affect you? It can be done. It may not be easy to start with but it goes get easier once your body adapts.

Everyone here are doing so well.

Joby1970 · 12/03/2010 08:07

traceyinrosso - have you thought of seeing a therapist/ councellor re und3erlying issues that are affecting your weight? Maybe that plus a healthy diet & a little exercise would help? Many people find that when they get their brain sorted out then the body follows..

CheeryCherry · 26/03/2010 14:42

Keep at it people! My worst wish has come true...yesterday I was diagnosed as diabetic. After the shock - I have not really had any obv symptoms - I have vowed to stop putting sugar into my mouth - except for one treat on a weekend. So if I had no incentive before, I certainly have now.
So! I have no choice but to get myself sorted, the gp mentioned the words 'life expectancy' which made me cry - but its the kick up the ass I need.
Will be referred to a dietition (how embarrassing) but til then all those creme eggs I have stashed and the choc I got for my birthday will be given away to other people....how generous of me!
How is everyone else doing? PositiveAttitude - have you started?
Tracyinrosso - how are you doing?

I'm so sorry CheeryCherry about your diagnosis. How are you feeling with it? Did you have symptoms that made you go and get checked? Hopefully once you see the dietition (which by the way is not embarrassing at all) then they will have lots of advice and tips for you to keep it under control. Good luck.

meandjoe · 01/04/2010 11:28

Cheery, so sorry to hear about the diabtes diagnosis. Remember that it is completely controllable and it can virtually disappear when you control your weight and sugar intake. My friend goes to see a dietician as she is very over weight and has said that it's not embarrassing at all, she's found him really helpful and just really easy to talk to. He has helped her loads and she is well on her way to a healthier lifestyle. It's nothing to be ashamed of, that's what those people are paid to do.

I am currently nicking any tips she gets from her dietician and trying to put them into practice for my self. I had 4 stone to lose when I startede in October last year which probably doesn't sound much but it feels a lot! I now have 3 stone to go so am slowly getting there (obviously Christmas slowed down any weight loss ). I am really changing things long term though. Making small changes makes a huge difference over long periods. I am sure you can do it! Good luck x
