Have you had a Gastric band?

Hi

I am booked in for a gastric band next Friday. For the last 2 weeks I have been on a pre-op diet which has restricted me to anything less than 0.5gms/100gms of fat. I am also not allowed pasta, rice, bread, meat, alcohol, fizzy drinks, biscuits, cakes, lots of things.

My diet has basically been jelly, baked potato with cottage cheese, fruit juice, fruit, vegetables and homemade soup.

It sounds yummy but it is so boring! I have lost 5kgs in the last 2 weeks and have a total of 10st to lost.

I am nervous for how things will be after surgery as there will obviously be a big change in my lifestyle due to the band.

Has anyone an experience of this that they can share with me?

Ok - I am still here! Since my pre-op diet (15th Jan) I have lost 17lbs. My appointment for my first fill should be through any day for around 3 weeks time.

alottolose, did you manage to see your GP?

PAcific I plan to get onto ukgastric band and Akhems, do you have an email address for me to contact you for next week?

Hi, I am not having a gastric band but a duodenal switch (its the same operation that akhems had). With 13 stones to lose, I would seriously look into other weight loss surgery methods- a bypass or a sleeve. Do your research and look at the failure/complication rate of the band.

If you know what PCT you live in then look here www.bospa.org/information.aspx?page=46 for various criteria. Different PCTs will need you to fulfill different criteria in order to get funding. The process is different according to which PCT you live in. They dont all follow NICE guidelines. The BOSPA website has loads of different information so I would suggest you spend alot of time nosing on there researching.

I have been to the support group in Surrey before but I wont be going on the 6th march as Ill be recovering from my op!

ANyone> hi limaCharlie

I have been reading up on www.bospa and I think I would happily go for gastric bypass if the consultant allows it.

I think even if i had to take unpaid time off work for a week post op, (I only work 4 hrs sat on my arse) that it would be worth it.

I kid myself that I have 7 stone to lose but actually, if my bmi is 59% then that means I could.should lose up to 10 stone.

Jesus wept, how did i get so fat.

LimaCharlie · 16/06/2010 12:37

QOD I often ask myself how I let it get this far? I wasn't always very overweight so why didn't I stop when the first stone went on; the second etc etc

I lost 3 stone last year using liquid protein shakes but have put some most of it back on again.

Thing is if you have to have a restrictive / puree / liquid diet in prep and afterwards - which is what causes the actual weight loss - then why can't I just do that and stick to it (without the actual surgery)- presumably the effects would be the same

QOD · 16/06/2010 15:48

because you CAN'T stick to it when you don't have to - if you are choosing to do a liquid shake diet then you can still actually eat what you want when you want.
Band restricts amount, bypass restricts absorption - so you CANNOT stuff your face. YOu are physically not able to - that's why I have been referred and accepted.
My bmi is 50% not 59 - slip of the finger. Woo that 9% makes a lot of difference. . . not.

my mum had one start of this year , she found it tough at first and ended up sick a few times but she has now lost 6 stone and feels so much better for it

Hi ladies

I am not in such a good place with my band at the moment. After my initial weightloss after surgery I got "lost" in the system and had to wait over 2 months for my first fill. During that time I lost momentum and put all the weight back on that I had lost. I have had a fill of 2.75mls in a 10mls band and I have no restriction really. I am back next week for a further fill so fingers crossed that will have some effect.
