Low carbers - can you answer a question or two please?

  1. How does one avoid (ahem) constipation when F&V is so limited?
  1. When you get to the weight you want to be, how do you start to eat more normally again without piling the weight? Everyone I know who has low-carbed successfully has put it back on again when they stopped dieting. And it just doesn't seem realistic to me to avoid bread/rice/pasta and more importantly CAKE! for ever.

cheers

  1. Drink loads of water, 2-3L.

Golden linseeds, from a health food shop, prevent constipation. You can sprinkle them on food or mix them in. They work a treat and are full of omega 3 aswell so very good for you.

  1. Eat carbs for breakfast or lunch but not dinner.

Hello - going back to Low carb today as it's the only thing that works for me.

Please can someone suggest a breakfast?

geordieminx · 22/01/2010 08:16

mushroom omlette or bacon and eggs

meaningofnight · 22/01/2010 08:21

Have no bacon or mushrooms! Am having 2 boiled eggs.

Do you think this kind of diet plan OK?:

Bfast = omelette or bacon + grilled tomato

Lunch = salad plus ham or tuna

Dinner - whatever rest of family have minus bread, pasta, taters, rice.

Can I eat Total 0% yoghurt?

Thanks. Have forgotten much of rules and can't find Atkins book.

Am so fat am disgusted with my own self!

Buda · 22/01/2010 08:31

Magnesium supplements help with the constipation.

Loads of water. LOADS.

No yoghurt.

You can have cream though!

You can also have berries! I used to have a few strawberries with cream as a treat.

I may be joining you as I am trying low GI at the moment and although I like it I am falling off wagon a lot. Atkins is more rigid which I may need.

You really are better to read the book.

With regard to putting the weight back on I think where most people fail is that they lose the weight and then start eating normally again. I.e. the normally that caused them to gain weight in the first place! The Atkins book actually recommends that you stick to a certain about of grams of carbs per day until you reach the weight you want to be and then you gradually increase your daily carb intake by I think 5 grams a day. And you are supposed to do that by increasing 'good' carbs and not white bread, cakes and biscuits!

Thanks Buda. Will continue search for book. Have to go to work now to earn living!
Shall we start mutual low carb support thing? (Sorry if that already in existence somewhere else on this site).

I am 5'6'' tall, 11 stones and 8lbs and a right gut lord. I want to lose 1.5 stones and I am starting today.

yes total yoghurt is fine

i am on golower and breakfast is yoghurt , raspberries and tiny amount of granola type seed clusters. It's nice and easier than cooking eggs for breakfast all the time.

As for maintenance , low carb is essentially doing the same as any diet by reducing the amount of calories albeit you are burning fat in a ketogenic way. So when you come off the diet you will put on some water weight.
By only sticking to unprocessed carbs once a day ie. brown rice or bread it should be feasible to maintain.

I read this last night which was interesting, here

meaningofnight · 22/01/2010 08:43

I think if you are apple shaped and put on weight in middle like me low carb is the way to go. I have been struggling with calorie counting.

mummymels · 25/01/2010 08:48

Thanks for that link ggirl - it's interesting. I am also doing Go Lower so have the same as ggirl for breakfast but would be good to join this thread.

To the original poster. Your fears are entirely well-founded and you should trust your own judgement.

The built-in flaw of the standard low-carb diet is that you have to do it for life or else you blow up like a life-raft with the toggle pulled the first time you eat a piece of potato. It isn't healthy to eat such small amounts of fruit and vegetables.... constipation is just the tip of the ice-berg. Wholegrains, pulses, fruit and veg provide vital nutrition, antioxidants and other properties not available in proteins.

'Low carb' is something of a dead horse, fortunately. People are gradually realising that it's a mistake to lump good foods like carrots and beans in with sugary doughnuts, call them all 'carbs' and avoid them all equally. More people are moving to 'good carb' diets... rather like the ones followed by Type II Diabetics to control blood-sugars. That way they are getting all the health benefits from the best examples in this important food-group and controlling their weight through sensible portion-control and exercise.
