DRinking 2.5 litres of water a day but fed up with constantly needing to pee

i find drinking the recommended 2 or whatever litres of water a day really helps with any weightloss plan i'm doing, and at the moment im trying to lose a stone - and as i'm exercising I have to make sure i'm drinking enouggh so I always have a bottle of water on the go.

However I need to go to the loo ALL the time and it's really annoying - everyone says the body adjusts after a while but a month later, I'm still needing to pee loads more than usual and I don't think my body WILL actually adjust.

How long will it take to adjust, or do some people just not need that amount of water??

anyone got any experience,advice etc?

Try drinking weak squash instead. Water does this to me aswell, squash doesn't. Odd hey! Do remember you get water from food aswell.

Joolsiam · 04/06/2009 21:40

I'm drinking about that amount too.

I agree - the urge to pee is almost constant, but I find I don't actually HAVE to go much more often - the bladder holds more than you realise.

I have 1/2 litre in the mornings before I leave for work, then full a litre bottle up and sip it throughout the morning and refill and repeat in the evening.

The key for me seems to be to space it out - look up from what I'm doing every half hour or so and take a big swig so I'm not drinking loads in one go.

I try to get my "allocation" over with by around 6pm so I'm not up in the night with a bladder bursting

I find I now need more water and fret if I don't have a water bottle with me at all times !

The weight loss is worth it though I think

SugarSkyHigh · 04/06/2009 22:17

agree the weight loss is worth it!! not to mention the improvement in my skin!

but I just cant help thinking my body doesnt need all this water if it keeping pee-ing it all out.

yes will try weak squash - but I know water is supposed to be the best?

You don't need to drink that much water. You don't really need to drink very much water at all - the 'eight glasses' thing is a myth, one that bottled water companies are happy to propagate. You get all the water you need from your food.

SugarSkyHigh · 04/06/2009 22:20

really? how do you know?
(i would love for that to be true)!

It's absolutely true - do you really think people throughout history spent their whole time glugging down tons of water and running to the privy every five minutes?

I had a friend with various 'issues' and one of the ways these came out was for her to restrict her fluid consumption. She wasn't particularly sporty or anything, but we were living in Cyprus at the time, so did drink more than we would here. She drank nothing. And seemed fine. Skinny and a bit faint sometimes, but I suspect she was also restricting her food as well (she wouldn't talk about this, but openly admitted the fluid drinking problems).

Joolsiam · 05/06/2009 08:37

A lot depends what sort of diet you are doing - you get a lot of water through food, so if you are restricting your food intake, then you need to ensure that you drink more water.

Just go by the colour of your pee - if it is bright yellow, then you are dehydrated.

Also, some diets can cause constipation unless you keep your fluid intake high to keep the stools soft - I've had that problem in the past.

Hi I'm new here and wondered if any men have had the same problem. Constantly wanting to wee and pee is a light green colour. No pain at all but I do drink a lot of water throughout the day. Could it be a water infection or is it normal to wee 12 times a day.

CovidPassQuestion · 04/10/2021 23:25

Are you taking vitamin B tablets? Do you drink green tea? Both these things can turn your urine green or luminous yellow.
12 times a day is a lot for a man, who usually have larger bladders than women (because women's internal organs take up more space that is shared with the bladder).
How much water do you drink in a day? (I don't consider 2.5l to be particularly high volumes tbh, just upper end of normal).

WelshDragon59 · 04/10/2021 23:38

Hi and I drink quite a lot of water throughout the day because I take laxido and it says on the instructions to drink plenty of fluids because the main side effect is dehydration and I don't really want that and I didn't know a man's bladder was bigger than a woman's and 2.5l is almost as much as I drink throughout the day, 2 litres I drink every day and I also drink two cups of coffee in the morning.

WelshDragon59 · 04/10/2021 23:47

Hi and I don't take vitamin b and I did drink green tea two days ago only 1 cup with honey. I drink two cups of coffee in the morning and throughout the day I drink 2 litres of water. I can finish the whole bottle by bedtime. Which is around 12 every night, I wake up once at night. I am taking laxido and the main side effect is dehydration so I drink plenty of water. When I go to the loo my wee is very light green and I'm not sure if that's normal. And today I have been to the loo 12 times.

Yes it’s a myth, there was a BBC health programme on a while back where scientists completely debunked this 8 glasses a day requirement.

CovidPassQuestion · 05/10/2021 08:23

@WelshDragon59 I'd try and speak to a GP if you can- your intake sounds reasonable, but 12 times a day is quite a lot for urination. It's best to just check if you're pre-diabetic or have an infection.
