power plate. Does it work

for toning? Cellulite?

My club has a couple of power plate machines. I would like to try it, but before spending the money, I wanted to have a feed back. Did it make any difference? Many thanks in advance.

I tried it twice... never noticed any difference, but it did give me awful pains in my chest

I think it can make a huge difference - but only if you are doing it right! The idea is to do pilates-type exercises on the machine whilst it vibrates, giving you a better workout in a shorter time. I find that it is great for targetting specific muscles that are difficult to get at otherwise, and as the workout only takes 15 minutes 3 times a week, you are more likely to do it than, say, an hour long Pilates class 3 times a week.

As an example, when I had a c-section, they cut the muscle between navel and pubic bone that I didn't know I had, but that made it difficult to sit up in bed or in the bath for a few weeks. Once healed, I forgot about this particular muscle until my first powerplate session, and boy did I remember then! The next day, I had problems getting out of the bath! I'd done lots of stuff on the powerplate for stomach and waist, and the next day I felt like I had abs of steel, muscles down my side that I didn't know existed and a really toned stomach .... but that I was wearing a great big fatsuit over the aforementioned abs of steel etc.

It is great for increasing muscle mass, toning and circulation, but there was an piece in the Telegraph yesterday saying it shifted fat too. Will try and find it.

I would recommend it, but make sure you get lots of training on it.

after the first session I really noticed a difference, after the second session less so and after subsequent sessions, nada

Onlyaphase · 10/05/2009 16:35

I think that is why ongoing coaching on the powerplate is a good thing, as it is v easy to not get the poses right so that you get the maximum impact.

Wow, thanks for your replies. May be worth the money... At my club, you can only using the power plate while having a personal training session, so I'll certainly get all the exercices, and I'll be ready to share them here!
When I asked about info/prices, they told me you can use it as a massage for cellulite as well, did you see an improvement there or do you belong to that lucky tiny % that has NOT cellulite!

Just read the article, well, if it is good enough for madonna, ... Then it is perfect for me! I'll book a session tomorrow and tell you about it!

My sister says it is good for cellulite - it certainly gives your legs a good massage and you can feel the increased circulation and tingling afterwards for a while. I haven't done enough massage on it yet to give you the definitive answer yet!

Will probably give you a headache from the vibrations and that's all!
Seriously - another fad....!

Roadworkers with pneumatic drills should have 6-packs if it worked!!!

gordonpym · 10/05/2009 20:23

But they do, Mark, trust me they do! Haven't you seen the Coca Cola light ads!!
