Any tips for losing weight while BFing?

I'm feeling pretty low: slightly depressed, not feeling attractive, had to buy new clothes as no old summer ones wd fit, new ones look rubbish too, just want to start taking some steps towards being fitter and a bit thinner.

Read on another thread that it's hard to lose weight when bfing, is it worth me trying? BFing has given me a dreadful sweet tooth which has led to me going from looking great just after baby having shed all baby weight to the fattest I've ever been.

Any tips on what to do first? Should I just do weight watchers? Has anyone done buggyfit? I look after my DD all day and don't really have anyone I can rely on from week to week to take care of her whilst I'm busy so easier if things I can do with her. Hubby has offered to pay for me to join gym but I hate them and don't know how I'll stay motivated to go (and am a bit scared of creches). Davina Dvd? any encouraging thoughts or weight loss stories appreciated.

I am currently doing WW & exc BF my 5 mth DS. I have lost 17lb in about 10 weeks. Going to the meetings for me is a great motivator.

In fact you get so many extra point sfor BF I think I'll do it till he's about 5

How many months have you been BFing? IMHE, you continue losing weight throughout the first year post-partum, even living on jaffa cake supplements .

I think you should be able to do WW if you wanted to, as from what I understand their methods involve eating a wide range of sensible food, in realistic portions - but personally I would never have survived BFing without relying heavily on cakes and biscuits too - I just needed the sugar sometimes. A friend does buggyfit (and they have a website listing all the classes nationally) and raves about it, and it is probably quite a sociable way to get fit, and possibly lose weight. At £5 a throw it's not cheap but you could probably get to know other like-minded mothers of buggy-age kids to hook up with and go on other walks. Have you thought about a bike with a child seat; they can sit in them from about 8mths to 4yrs or thereabouts - great exercise and kids often love them.

It's hard to feel good about yourself when you are tired, have new wobbly bits, and little or no time to yourself, but am sure to your friends and family you are beautiful (excuse that if it sounds like a nauseous pop ballad!).

cheers daisy. Do they give you meal plans to follow? Can I ask what you've eaten today, for example? I am really bad about eating lunch, so would be delighted to be told what to eat so I don't have to think/can get it ready in advance.

I would be very grateful just to lose a stone. BMI about 28/29 right now.

we had friends round to dinner on friday and they signed me up for a 10k run. It was while I was standing by sink doing some washing up. Perhaps he saw the size of my bum and thought I needed some help ...

Er, have not lost any for some time. I really can put away a lot of food. I have a bigger appetite than all my female friends. Am a total foodie and I make cakes occasionally to bring in cash so am my own worst enemy re: weightloss!

DD is 7 months. I try to walk a lot and would say I do plenty of walking rather than sitting around but weight is still creeping on. I'm only a few pounds heavier than pre-preg weight but I was a bit overweight to start off with and I'm now about to be a size 16. Makes me rather sad as I used to be extremely athletic and did ballet for years. So am not convinced weight will fall off me unless I have some help managing my diet while bfing. Have been bfing since birth obv.

The first week you get a rough meal planner, but every week you get a little magazine with meal ideas in it. It is based on portioned controlled eating, whilst ensuring variety and all food groups.

Today I've had..

2 slices wholemeal toast & butter
2 satsumas
A large bowl homemade veggie soup(WW recipie) and a ham salad sandwich and a Muller light yoghurt
A pack of mini Jammie Dodgers stolen from DD's treat box (only 1.5 points)
Large portion of pasta with a tomato & pepper sauce and a grilled chicken breast.

Plus about a pint of skimmed milk in drinks

HTH

BTW I still have a good few points left to use up, so will alsobe having some supper in preperation for his night feed/feeds. Probably some cereal.

IME it has not affected my milk supply at all.

titferbrains · 05/05/2009 20:55

Daisy thanks for that, really helpful to see that. Think I might try it.

off to defrost some veggie soup now!! had been planningto have cauliflower cheese....

I swear by porridge. Have to say it keeps you going for hours in the morning, and really reduces the need for mid-morning biccies. But I would find it hard to survive without a few cups of tea & biscuits in the day. My old flatmate lost 2 stone on weightwatchers over a year, and swears that she never felt hungry (although it did creep back on once she packed it in, so I suppose it has to become a bit of lifestyle change). Could you do swimming or summat in the evening (assuming your DH is at home then) - that way you could avoid creches.

titferbrains · 05/05/2009 22:45

husband works v long hours so he can't help. Think am going to have to invest in buggyfit and other daytime classes to shift weight. My tummy is just horrible.

Mine too - looks like uncooked dough! But I just disguise it with tunic-stylie tops! At the end of the day I know there's no point struggling to be a supermodel, might as well focus on the positive things - have all my own teeth

MadameCheese · 08/05/2009 19:58

titferbrains - or you could give slimming world a go, also make allowances for bfing. Really good for big appetites as you can eat soooo much on the plan and it's sustainable.

smallorange · 08/05/2009 20:04

If you have time, British Military Fitness might do a class in your area. I loved it, lost weight and really toned up. Don't be put off by its bootcamp connotations - the instructors are - on the whole - well trained and very good at motivating you.

Snorris · 08/05/2009 20:18

I've been going to Slimming World since the beginning of March and I've lost 1 1/2 stone so far . Dd5 is 5 months and I don't think it's been detrimental to my milk supply.

MadameCheese · 10/05/2009 20:48

Well done Snorris!
