Comfort Eating.....how do I stop?

Hiya,

I often comfort eat and really need to stop it. I eat when I am studying, writing my book, cross stitching, watching television etc. Possibly more eating when board.

I think I am in a rut, and know I need to get out of it to loose wieght. How?

It's all about willpower. There is a choice eat it or not. Find out why the need is there to 'comfort eat' If it's sheer boredom could you not take up salsa classes or something enjoyable that will also help shift a few pounds.
Swim, it's cheap and at night (I find that's the time I would comfort eat) there isn't that many people around.
Take a friend.

Let's face it all nice things are bad for you. Who ever got enjoyment eating raw carotts and lettuce leaves

I'm not being smug. I am overweight myself and have had to resort to taking Orlistat. I can't comfort eat otherwise I will shit orange fat uncontrollably

atterual · 27/04/2009 12:44

what is Orlistat?

jofeb04 · 27/04/2009 14:20

I do swimming four times a week. Its always when my dh is in work till late (he works shifts until midnight quite often), and the dc go to bed at 7pm. So, I've got many hours on my own whilst dc are asleep and dh is in work.

Lol @ eating carrots.

Whats Orlistat?

Orlistat can be given by GP on prescription or I think you can now get something in Boots. Basically absorbs loads of fat and it comes out the other end not on your arse!!
Anyone out there managed to get it from their GP?

SOLOisMeredithGrey · 27/04/2009 15:53

I comfort eat recently too. Am very unhappy. I want to lose 2+ stones and know with each mouthful that I'm not helping myself. It is all about willpower as shinyshoes says...

shinyshoes · 27/04/2009 22:01

Yes HarryP2Sophie I got it from my GP.

Orlistat is the brand name of Xenical and now Alli that is sold in Boots.

It blocks the absorbtion of fat from the food being eaten, the fat dosen't stay in the body, it erm, comes out of your bum.

It encourages you to eat low fat because if you don't you will literally shit fat. I mean literally. The higher fat the meal the more oily deposits leak from you. The stools are bright orange and oily and comes out when you least expect it. But the weightloss is huge. I think it averages aroung 1.5 stone in a month.

It's been all over the news lately. I'm on it. (Xenical) I have eaten very low fat today and (turn away if you're squeamish) I have had a very slight rectal leakage. I have been on it since yesturday.

A friend of mine has been on it since last wednesday and already she's lost 4lb.

I got Reductil from my GP, which makes you feel full quicker.

I can sympathise - I am a comfort eater, but I have found this really works for me. I have lost about 2 stone from November - slow & steady.

It isn't an appetite suppressant (sp?)- you still feel hungry, but it really helps with portion control. I have found my fixation with food has lessened, and as a result, I am probably more active. I was really lucky to have a very sympathetic & supportive GP. I think you need to be at least 3 stone overweight to be prescribed, and to have really tried controlling your diet beforehand.

My mum used to take Xenical. She just couldn't touch fatty foods ~ and her poo floated and wouldn't flush it made her so embarrassed that she wouldn't visit anyone.

TheYearOfTheCat · 29/04/2009 13:19

OP - the other thing is that you may be thirsty, and be misinterpreting the signals as hunger. Apparently the bits of your brain which register thirst & hunger are right beside each other, and so we often feel hungry when in fact we need water.

(I am the world's worst BTW, at taking enough fluid, so I don't know why I feel qualified enough to offer advice )
