Drinking water for weight loss - is there any science in that?

All you keeop eharing wrt weight loss is 'drink loads of water' - but why? Surely there can't be a scientific benefit to that, can there? Is it just so that you feel fuller and don't eat as much? I appreciate that drinking water has health benefits but I'm referring specifically to losing weight here.

It fills you up and you probably use more calories processing it than it contains 0 .Also makes you feel virtuous

i think the idea is it's to prevent water retention. if you're dehydrated your body hangs onto more water, so you show heavier on the scales iyswim. no idea if there's actually any truth in it mind.

A lady I know started drinking the recommended 2 litres of water a day and lost weight without meaning to (she was just trying to be healthy).

I suspect the water retention thing is true as my Dad gave up Diet Coke (which makes you retain water) and drank water instead. He lost a stone in less than a month. If only I drank diet coke in the first place....

It also gives you a flatter tum if you stop drinking fizzy stuff and keep to the water. Give it a week or so and you'll be amazed at the difference.

Apparently it also helps keep your skin hydrated and means you shouldn't be all baggy and saggy when you have lost weight. Well that's what I was told on here and am hanging onto for dear life!

MakkaPakkasPacamac · 10/03/2009 14:36

Is that really true about the fizzy drinks though? I can see how it might make you a bit bloated but surely the odd burp and all the fizz is gone, leaving you with still liquid in your stomach? (Pac-a-mac is now panicking about having to give up Diet Coke )

Don't be tempted to overdo the water drinking. A woman died a few months ago from drinking too much water.

Drink enough but not too much. Being dehydrated can make you want to eat more. They say that just having a drink of water between meals can ward off a hunger pang.

lilacclaire · 10/03/2009 14:52

Thats what I was going to say ABD. Don't go over your 2 litres (unless your exercising a lot) because that wasn't an isolated case either.
Also im not so sure it would make any diffence to your skin unless your terribly dehydrated, you need to up your essential fatty acids intake for lush skin im afraid, yes FAT and lots of it evil

Malkuth · 10/03/2009 14:54

Lilacclaire I am pretending I haven't read that!

Divvy · 10/03/2009 16:33

Wasnt that woman on lighter life though, and she drank 6L a day?
