Fat families - it's up to us to protect the kids right?

I know this will be contentious so I apologise in advance to all of those of you who will insist your habits don't reflect onto your kids but....

My entire family has always been and continues to be obese. I love them to death but in my family comfort eating and generally eating too much was always the norm.

I lost all my excess weight and by and large have kept to a size 12 for a decade. I'm now trying to lose the last bit so I'm a healthy BMI after my second pregnancy.

My DD is a bit large for her age - DS is a bit big too but he's only six months. I'm working very hard to ensure DD gets exercise and doesn't eat rubbish and generally eats the right amount but I'm being berated by friends and family who insist that I don't need to worry about it at her age (she's two).

But surely if by five your tendency towards obesity is set this is exactly what I need to do to avoid her going through the same struggles I have. I hope to bring her up without my neurosis - DH's family are thin so she's got a fighting chance I reckon!

And surely it's my job as part of caring for her to worry about this?

Yes it is.

I agree there's no need to worry about it, however, there's no need to ignore it either.

It is our job, as parents and guardians, to make sure our children are putting the right stuff into their gobs.

I reiterate - don't worry about it - just ignore the crap from family and friends, and carry on doing what you are doing. Odd moments of excess, like at family occasions, won't do her harm so long as the rest of the time, she and you are getting the balance right.

Good luck with losing the last bit of weight and bloody well done for sorting your overall weight issue out.
