I'm looking to try one of these rather than signing up to the gym- which I will never go to. Does anyone have any suggestions? Something to burn calories/tone up but not for experts.

TIA

CeceliaAhern · 25/01/2009 00:45

Thanks, I always thought she was boot camp style, which terrifies me a bit

was going to get the one Madonna's woman did but its getting slated in the reviews so wouldn't bother with that one!

MarkPT · 25/01/2009 09:52

You won't like my answer, but I had this on my PT blog on Jan 2nd.

Having said that Davina's are ok, as she has her PT's working with her.

weetimorousdizzybeastie · 25/01/2009 13:38

I see what you're saying MarkPT and am sure none of us are naive enough to think that Davina will be a mirable solution but surely for those of us too self conscious to go to a gym/class etc having something that we enjoy in the privacy of our own home is better than nothing?

I am fully aware my diet doesn't help but have found that I am more enclined to eat healthily when am doing some form of excercise as I don't want to see all the hard work wasted iyswim

I could find a million excuses for being the size I am, quitting smoking, being pregnant 4 times in the last 6yrs, having 3 kids aged 5 & under and husband that work long hours on shift work - I can't go to the gym/swimming anymore which is how I used to keep fit and finding some 'me' time is sacraficed more often than not due to the kids/house/dh taking priority

is there one, with your expertise on the subject, that you could recommend over and above the rest?

I've discovered I can borrow fitness DVDs at my local library for up to 3 weeks free of charge. They have a fairly good selection too. My favourite at the moment is Rosemary Conley's Salsacise which I've used about 5 or 6 times. I've just renewed it for another 3 weeks!

Could be worth seeing if your local library does the same, then you can try out different ones free of charge.

Winston · 25/01/2009 16:46

Hi dizzybeastie, I am like you. Unable to go to gym and have very little 'me' time so have just started using exercise dvd. I have been using Claire Richards from Steps "Five step fat attack" and I have to say for me its brill and I am really enjoying it. I started just doing the warm up and toning but can now do all 5 sections. Its good that you can choose from a combat style exercise and/or aerobic workout. Like I said it works for me and am sure wouldnt for everyone but worth a go. I have also started walking everywhere as I used my car way too much. I have bought a pedometer so I can see how much I walk each day and increase it little by little. I have a lot to loose weight wise but am going to do little bits week by week and hopefully this will help push me in the right direction.

MarkPT · 25/01/2009 17:18

Agree with your points Dizzie - I just don't want people to believe that your buy the DVD, do it 3 times a week, and the weight will drop off! Like anything you get out what you put in, so look to workout hard, add weights to the workout, and DO change your diet. If you don't change it, you should expect minimal results.
I have further nutrition advice / reports on my blog if anyone wanted further free info.

If I had to recommend one, I would say Davina as I have seen parts of it, and the exercises they use are the best exercises, if not performed in a 'great' routine (if that makes sense!) Plus at least Davina admitted to changing her diet, cutting back on wheat, dairy etc, and eating more fresh natural foods. Believe me, cut these right back and 4 weeks in you WILL notice the difference!

MarkPT · 25/01/2009 17:20

Also, setting realistic goals and targets is a BIG help.
The old Plan to Fail, Fail to plan is sooo true.

I get all my PT clients setting goals, with specific completion dates, and your more likely to stick to a plan then.

I have a 4 keys to success-goals/positive mindset document that I'll be adding to my blog as a free signup soon, if anyone is interested....again free!!

CeceliaAhern · 25/01/2009 19:06

Thanks all. Winston, yours was the one I was initially keen on. Someone else recommended Mel B. Sorry, MarkPT, but I will take your points on board too. 4 weeks? Sounds good to me.

I have Davina's latest one, it's very good.
You work hard but you can build up as there is an always an easier way shown.
I agree, you do need to look at your diet as well, but I find that once you've worked out you don't want to undo your hard work.

MarkPT · 25/01/2009 20:01

uh huh!! No worries - good luck with it!

sorrento · 25/01/2009 21:36

I am quite fit, even if I say so myself and found Davina's latest DVD quite challenging.
The library is a great idea because any routine will lead to muscle memory after about 8 weeks. Just keep changing the dvd.
Too be honest I cannot praise the Jason Vale juicing diet enough, that combined with a decent spin class, it would be hard to go wrong.

MarkPT · 25/01/2009 22:11

Yeah Jason Vale isn't bad. The only problem with it, is if you're having too many juices, your stomach enzymes aren't working properly as there is nothing to break down.
It is good in principle because you are having natural foods, but often you are cutting back on calories too much.
Then, when you go back to normal foods, you will pile weight back on because your body has been used to a low number of calories.

If you choose this route, definately scale things back in, rather than stopping the juicing and straight back onto whole foods.

Just my tuppence......again

sorrento · 25/01/2009 22:17

Trust me I'm not cutting back too many calories Mark, I only wish I could lol
I did the 2 weeks detox and now just make sure I don't eat after 6pm ever, that works for me and cooking everything from scratch, absolutely nothing but fresh meat and veg for tea.

MarkPT · 25/01/2009 22:28

Good work Sorrento! Sounds like you've got a plan that works!Keep it going!

Fleurlechaunte · 04/02/2009 18:12

This one here is brilliant. I am no fan of fitness dvds, in fact I have never owned one before but this one really appealed to me. I did it this afternoon and I was totally worn out afterwards. I run 3 - 4 times a week for 40 minutes and I was as tired after doing this dvd as I am when I run. Really good.

racmac · 04/02/2009 18:34

IF any of you have the Wii i recommend the Fitness Coach - it takes your measurements and does a few tests and then comes up with different exercises every time you do it and you can make it harder.
