in the next few weeks?
I've been to WW before, you get a series of info booklets that builds up to all the info you need.

Is SW the same? I'm asking as the class was a little 'odd' and I don't know if I want to go back. It's really the only one that convenient.

it was my first meeting today aswell, what do you mean about it being odd?

I do feel about confused about what i'm supposed to be eating tbh.

MyTakenIdentity · 13/01/2009 21:26

I haven't been to class since 05 (and then only went for 3/4 weeks as my group was "odd" too), but then you got your starter pack on your first night and that was it, unless you buy cookbooks/magazines etc.

I did lose approx a stone, so it does work.

I was toying with the idea of re-joining, but a couple of people who picked on me at school go to my local class and all the others are a good 20 min drive away.

The SW threads are good for advice though

I might stick to online and MN then!! The group seemed to be a social meeting for a group of friends rather than inclusive. But that's not really a problem, they must have been there for ages and used it as a chance to socialise, which I understand.

The food advice was just odd; use a seasoning mix for 6 'syns' to flavour a shepherds pie, rather than herbs, tomatoes etc for free. Then lasagna made with same mince recipe as pie, with a tin of macaroni cheese as the sauce!!

I was aghast really at this sort of advice, I think I should start a Ministry of Food class and recruit them all.

What was odd about your meeting? I think I'll search out MN's SW thread and check for rogue tins and dubious advice!!

I lost 2 stone last year quite quickly and easily with SW.

I only eat/cook from fresh, yes there is a lot of short cuts, like using smash but TBH it doesn't take that long to boil a pan of potatoes, so I just did my own cooking.

Macaroni cheese was from 'the old days' of slimming world when it used to be free on green but now it isn't.

I would just make a cheese sauce and use your HE cheese.

I use 1/2 pt (HE1) milk with a tablesoon of sauceflour (in the flour aisle of supermarket) and an oz of cheese also (HE1 - though not sure if you can have 2 HE1 on new plan?)per person. Pop in the microwave for 1 min, take out stir, put back in take out stir and after about 4 or 5 mins you have delicious thick cheesy sauce

I cook everything from scratch, but always feel poncey if I say this in any sort of public arena. I was surprised because I thought people of my age, in my 50's, had been taught to cook as children and still did. Most of the people at SW meet were in their 60's.

I'm also vegetarian and have to go through the whole rigmarole of...... 'How long, never!; I couldn't, I'd miss bacon; chicken isn't really meat; he wouldn't eat that,' and as I've that conversation a thousand times I try to avoid it.

I think I'll go on 'What have learned as you've got older' thread and say 'to shut up if I can't face hearing the same old thing again and again!!

PS have got a rotten cold and headache and am grumpy and judgey today, sorry

I don't think there's dubious food advice in the cookbooks, it's a lot of tomatoes, herbs and stuff and cooking (not one of my skills really so I find it a bit tedious). which I'm all for if it means I can save my syns for something nice

FWIW I agree that we should maybe be able to tell people to shut up if we want. I'm not a veggie, but I'm not one for questioning other people's choices. Each to their own, etc. Funny, because I used to love debating at school, but nowadays it's no arguments for me!

TreeTrunkThighs · 14/01/2009 12:33

I have done SW before, 2 years ago and lost a stone in a month - hence why back on it now. It might take a while to really 'get' what you can and can't eat but with planning and forethought it is ok.

IME I don't think you will get any further info sheets/packs/books at meetings just experiences and ideas - which I find invaluable tbh so I'm heading back tonight to see how week 1 has really gone. Eeek!

Earthymama · 14/01/2009 21:58

How did you get on?

I'm not as nasty as that earlier post made out!! Sinus infection and sugar deprivation grumpiness, sorry!

I've been ok today, we had Chili for tea which was really nice and filling and some rhubarb for pud.

I have no idea what I need to lose in SW terms, leader didn't tell me , or how many sins to have. any ideas? I'm 13 st

I follow SW and it does work (well, it does if you stick to it which I haven't been doing, but am back on it now iyswim!!) and tbh, I've never heard of the macaroni cheese malarky! There's a great recipe for lasagne sauce in one of the SW mags, I'll look it out for you if you want it, with quark and it's lovely.
I really like SW, it fits in with how we eat as a family. Today I've had cereal for breakfast, a banana mid-morning, beef, potato and veg at lunch (I work in a school that still does proper meals ) and a pear and 2 satsumas, then for dinner we had pork steaks, mash and veg, and I had a Shape yoghurt. I've got a lot of syns left over today but yesterday was mum's birthday and I had a piece of bday cake so it's evened itself out.

happynewRia · 15/01/2009 08:07

EM - with SW you set your own goal. and syns are between 5 - 15, although it does say in the new stuff that your consultant will help you decide. Pah, I need all 15!!!

hi ladymariner. Is that a school with no bizarre food at all?

ladymariner · 15/01/2009 16:00

I wouldn't go that far (!!) but we do have some really nice things on usually and if all else fails you can have a jacket spud with cheese and beans like I had today, didn't fancy the pizza or the chicken pie that was on the menu.

happynewRia · 15/01/2009 17:16

sounds nicer than the PC muck menu they serve at ours. Jacket spud with beans

Earthymama · 22/01/2009 12:39

I'm used to WW when you are given more guidance, I think.

I went to a meeting led by a different consultant and it was fab. They all knew one another but talked to the new folk, shared hints and were very kind and welcoming.

We had the pasta quiche which was lovely, but I'm still confused as to the reasons for recommending packet food and sauces, they are foul!

PS I'd lost 1lb, even though I was so confused.

OP posts:
FourArms · 22/01/2009 14:40

I think that they recommend the 'ready made' things as that is what a lot of people are used to, and SW tries not to alienate them by suggesting that everything be cooked from scratch.
