Playing netball as an adult? What other female 'team' sports are there?

OK, so grown men play football - what do women do?

I'm thinking about trying a team sport because frankly my self-motivation is zero and I think if I was part of a team it would encourage me to stick at something.

Do adults play hockey/netball etc or is it just schools and university teams?

Am waay out of my comfort zone here - would love to hear what others do, and whether it's something you can do as an adult without feeling like a complete twonk

Yes, look on the notice boards at your local sports centre. They could have ladies hockey, netball or volleyball.

Am trying to think of others...

Also you don't have to be good to take part, just reasonably fit

Have fun!

How about a badminton club? Get all sorts of fitness levels there, might be a way to start a bit more slowly?

cyteen · 28/09/2008 13:34

women's football is a growth area, i believe.

nappyaddict · 28/09/2008 13:35

tennis? running club? swimming club?

WhatsupDoc · 28/09/2008 20:31

Thanks for your suggestions.

Do any of you play any of these sports as an adult?

I am very apprehensive about going - will be on my own, and I have an image that the club will be filled with fit, nubile young saplings or hooray henry types.

PS LOVE the idea of a swimming club, as I'm only just learning to swim, but watched my local club a few weeks ago and it seems full of 8 yr olds.

Seems that fitness is all geared up to kids and teenagers and once you get to a certain age you're expected to join a gym

Badminton, rounders, cricket, football, rugby, tennis, uni-hoc, hockey, lacrosse, cycling, running, water aerobics, squash?

Your local council might have details of local sports teams, try your local sports centre or a local uni or college might allow non-students to join SU sports clubs.

My dd's dance school run dance classes for the parents in the evenings too. No kids allowed!

CristinaTheAstonishing · 28/09/2008 20:50

How about a dance class?

nappyaddict · 28/09/2008 23:08

as an adult i do a dance class and an aerobics class. a friend of mine does tennis, squash and badminton at a club.

YellowFin · 28/09/2008 23:10

fooball

YellowFin · 28/09/2008 23:12

though football teams invariably have a freakily talented 17year old. I've let it slide since I've got older.

tennis and badminton are kind of team sports too

WhatsupDoc · 28/09/2008 23:23

Thanks, I have danced alot in the past and want something new to do.

Badminton sounds good - but do you not have to be in a couple? As with tennis? Do people play tennis in the winter? (I'm shite at tennis, but love it)

My friend has yearly membership to a tennis club so i presume so.

Simplysally · 29/09/2008 10:44

A decent badminton group should mix everyone up from time to time so you play both with and against different people each time so going as a single person shouldn't present any problems. I doubt if you'd be the only singleton there!!

xserialshopper · 29/09/2008 11:03

I have a friend who plays hockey and another friend who takes tennis lessons. I know some pensioners I used to work with who play babminton every monday evening (I really admire them for doing this) - they've playing for years. Our local tennnis club does community tennis on a sunday and have a couple of hours esp for adults.
