Starting this following the discussion on AIBU last night...

Have you slowly let yourself slide into weight gain over several years and are unhappy about it but feel powerless to change?

Are you avoiding going out and seeing people because you don't want them to see how you've let yourself go, or because you can't fit into your clothes? Are you living in (DP's) T shirts and jeans or tracky bottoms?(you can call them yoga pants if it makes you feel better)

Is your family album decidedly lacking in photos of you with your DCs because you camera dodge?

Are you tired all the time and a bit secretly down about it all, but coping on the surface?

If so, then this is the thread for you! All welcome!

We're going to be working on our self esteem issues and create new habits that will take us, one step at a time, to feeling much better physically and mentally. We will be building up to taking more conscious exercise and trying to change our dietary habits that got us in this sorry state to start with.

I think it was Starbear that mentioned trying to do something similar to the FLY threads on Good Housekeeping.

Perhaps we could post each day our plans (whether it be exercise, food, motivation, water intake, giving up something or whatever) and then see how we did each day.

I should really lose 2 stone to be in the middle of the healthy recommended weight for my height and build. Personally I'm low carbing - been trying it on and off for a while, hoping I can stick to it this time.

OK so today I'm going to eat just breakfast lunch and dinner and 1 snack, drink 8 250ml glasses of water, and do 30 mins either walking or on my stationary bike.

Good luck.

Mascara, I'm doing ww's.
Avocado are 3points per half and lean beef mince is 3.5 points per 100g.
That's 2 - 2.5 for the quantity you said, though couldn't find points value of Mice

MascaraOHara · 22/09/2008 14:59

Ooooh lean mice probably would have been healthier and money is a little tight at the minute..

I had less than a qtr avocado so will assume 2.5 to be on the safe side lol

so I'm doing well so far lol. I'll try and remember to bring my little cardboard calculator with me tomorrow though only follow the points loosely

I've not had chance to get on and post. I'm going to focus this week on my eating habits and then factor in more exercise next week.

I seem to find that suddenly changing to less food + more exercise = super hungry and grumpy, more likely to give in.

I had a good day food wise yesterday, and again today. Even managed to resist the reduced cinnamon rolls in the supermarket

Hope everyone is getting on OK, well done to those who are losing

RubySlippers · 22/09/2008 19:33

couldn't get to my weigh in tonight

perhaps a good thing after my indulgent weekend?!

i am also doing WW - i find it suits me as you can eat "anything"

MascaraOHara · 23/09/2008 09:41

Thanks Columbo, I think if I could get out running 3 times a week, I could start at week 6 but it's just finding the time to go out running lol.. Will try a different tactic next week (will need the rest of the week to devise a new tactic)

Couldn't resist getting on the scales this morning. weighed in at 10st5 and a half but I think that might have been a bit of a fluke!

TheConstantIroner · 23/09/2008 10:01

No weigh-in for me either yesterday. Also guilt of an indulgent weekend(too much wine ), so probably for the best.

Have started the week well and hopefully back on track.

Still need to get off my backside and do some exercise. Not sure about running (might frighten the neighbours), but have planned to go walking with some other mums after dropping kids off at school tomorrow morning.

Must get some good music on to ipod to keep me going - any suggestions?

ColumboWearsControlPants · 23/09/2008 10:39

Constant - I like disco for walking, really bouncy and gets you moving - Jackson 5 Can You Feel the Force, Peaches and Herb Shake your Groove Thing, Diana Ross Upside Down, Rose Royce Car Wash etc.

Went for another run last night same route about 6.5k, was hard work but felt better for doing it.

I'm not weighing myself for a while to try to break the focus on weight, since its not really my weight that is the problem, but my habits. Losing weight will be a beneficial side effect.

Hello

Been absent for a few days. Bit of a rubbish week really with kids ill and what-not.
Weighed in yesterday - lost nothing! Better than a gain though I suppose...

Hoping to get back on track properly this week.
I will have a 30 min brisk walk/cycle ride every day and continue with the 8 glasses of water and healthy snacks

MascaraOHara · 24/09/2008 09:21

Hi guys,

I'm just quickly checking in for the day.. I've been out for 30mins exercise already today but didn't do much due to back.. I did 2 bout of running for 7 mins with a 1 min break then spent the last 15mins doing interval training run 1 min, walk 1 min. Back feels sore still but no worse than before.

I might try and get out for a gentle walk a bit later which hopefully will loosen it off.

I'm feeling pretty good and have now lost a little over 2lbs.

TheConstantIroner · 24/09/2008 12:07

morning everyone

Didn't go on walk this morning as planned but keeping busy by cleaning the windows, inside and out, and washing car.

Well done Mascara on your weight loss. I've not weighed myself this week but clothes are feeling a little looser.

I've also had less indigestion at night, which I'm sure is due to giving up bread and drinking less wine.

Columbo - thanks for music suggestions. Some great tracks there. (I was going to abbreviate you name to CWCP but thought it sounded like a character from Star Wars

pickupthismess · 24/09/2008 15:08

Hi all

Well am a bit miserable because despite not eating any goodies I have lost a measly 2lb since the thread started and I am always hungry

My downfall is I don't exercise anywhere near enough. I hate gyms and I am trying to swim at least once a week but clearly it isn't enough.

ColumboWearsControlPants · 24/09/2008 15:59

2lb is good! Don't be disheartened...I mean I haven't lost anything at all fact I've gained 3lb (due to fluid retention after going back carbs). Try not to focus on the weight - after all, what are you going to do - stop being healthy and good because it is not working fast enough? That way lies madness.

This is long haul not a quick fix, you're doing well!

morning everyone

how many calories does house work burn

did yoga last night and vigorous hoovering ... have been running up the stairs at work and just moving more

had poached egg for breakfast ... am tired of weetabix and blueberries

hope everyone is ok ... Pickup - 2 lbs in a week is GOOD - columbo is right

MascaraOHara · 25/09/2008 09:09

2lbs in a week.. is excellent. Don't they say that if you want to keep it off you should aim to lose no more than 2lbs a week.

I don't have time to squeeze in any exercise today so I'm having a rest day. I have walked or run everyday so far this week and will run both tomorrow and Saturday with another rest day on Sunday.

I'm having half a pink grapefruit for my breakfast each day which I put half a teaspoon of sugar on the night before... It's very odd as it's seems to stop me being hungry during the morning. More so than porridge or a weetabix. It's really bizarre but definitely worth a try! I have a cup of tea too

For a few weeks before I started with you guys I had bee trying to cut down on my tea by swapping a cup here and there for a cup of hot water with lemon juice.. My skin is really clear at the moment, I keep telling myself it's down to the hot water lol

Sounds like everybody is making a real effort. Well done.

RubySlippers · 25/09/2008 09:35

interesting about the grapefruit Mascara ...

Niecie · 25/09/2008 13:54

Hi everybody,

Not doing very well at the moment.

I am still trying to get into my groove, routinewise, with everything now both my boys are at school full time and the exercise leaves something to be desired.

Mascara - I think I remember from the mists of time that grapefruit has some sort of enzyme in it that affects appetite. Or is that pineapple....?

Anyway, my MIL has grapefruit every morning, and a yoghurt with fruit, followed by Ryvita and honey and is, for her age, very slim. . Mind you after that breakfast she doesn't want another meal for most of the day and drives us mad by refusing to eat when the rest of us need 3 meals a day.

I am forever toying with the idea of running but know that deep down I couldn't face going out in the cold and rain and would always find an excuse not to bother.

So I was wondering if anybody could recommend a good exercise DVD with decent music. No modern, pumping dance music

A bit of 70's or 80's disco would be great - and not to hard either or I will give up before I get started!

Thank you.

pickupthismess · 25/09/2008 16:35

Niecie

Glad you asked that because I was wondering if I should get a good, simple DVD. So bump.

Thanks all for telling me 2lb is good. It's just I was hoping for about 4 or even 5lb becasue your first week is normally the best. Anyway, still at 2lb when I weighed myself this morning. Did go swimming this afternoon with kids and managed a few lengths and intend to do it again in the morning.

MascaraOHara · 25/09/2008 17:00

I have the vivki binns one.. it's quite nice as she's just by herself with instructor and she seems normal iykwim.. as ever though, I've only do it once

Niecie · 26/09/2008 14:25

I tried the Angela Griffin one this morning as I have had it for ages and never got round to trying it out.

Boy, was it dull. It could have been the awful music but I am a bit concerned that exercise DVD's just aren't the right exercise for me! I will see if I can get the Vicky Binns one cheap on ebay though - maybe that will be different.

And if I am not cut out for exercise DVD's what do I do that isn't expensive and doesn't involve going out in the cold and rain?!!

ColumboWearsControlPants · 26/09/2008 15:22

Niecie, I do recommend either power walking or if you can manage it, running. You soon get into it and I now really look forward to a bit of "me time" when I go out...no pushchair, no dog, no phone etc etc, just me and some groovy music out in the park. As for the cold and rain, I don't go out if it is raining but even in the cold you soon warm up and it is very refreshing, relaxing and a great morale booster.

Also running burns calories like there's no tomorrow! Much more than the same amount of time on my rower or exercise bike.

However, I can recommend Billy Blanks Tae Bo DVDs - very motivating and definitely a decent workout. I think the box set is on Amazon for 8.99 at the moment (3 DVDs).

ColumboWearsControlPants · 29/09/2008 08:58

Did everyone have a good weekend?

Although the weather is getting colder, I was thinking how great it will be to keep on doing this and emerge in the spring feeling lighter and healthier, at a time when I would usually be grumpily thinking about starting a diet in preparation for summer...we can do this now, under cover of cold and darkness and we can really get a good start.

I've been rereading Gillian Rileys How to Stop Overeating and it is brilliant, it concentrates on how to change those little habits like reaching for the biscuits step by step and it really is making a difference, I'd really recommend it for those who've been asking for tips on how to give up the sweet stuff and unneccessary snacks.

I've not lost any pounds but I have lost 2 inches from my belly.

Good luck this week!

OP posts:
ColumboWearsControlPants · 29/09/2008 09:01

Another tip for easy exercise (apart from the Billy Blank DVDs): get a pedometer. Really motivates you to reach your 10000 steps. I've got the Omron Walking style II and it's accurate and measures steps and how many of them are aerobic.

OP posts:
TheConstantIroner · 29/09/2008 10:21

Columbo - agree with you about keeping going with this through the winter. There's something about exercising during this time of year that gives a good sense of achievement.
(and well done on the inch loss)!

I haven't had the best of weeks but reading back through everyone's posts has reminded me of how motivated I felt a couple of weeks ago.

So I'm going to dig the pedometer out and aim for three decent walks per week to start with.
I will go shortly...because I've just seen tomorrows weather forecast

pickupthismess · 30/09/2008 20:10

Am still going strong. Lost a few more pounds. Feel still v positive mainly because I am not starving myself just cutting out the junk. I know it won't be as quick as a diet but I'd rather get there eventually than not at all.

Did exercise today but been pretty crap the rest of the week. Who is Billy Blank?
