I need to lose four stones. I've lost weight many times in the past using calorie counting but four stones seems insurmountable . I can't stay on a diet for more than about three weeks.
I don't want to use MJ etc so tell me how you did it and how you kept you yourself motivated. .

Two stone in three months is really good. I am 65 and have had to reduce thyroid medication about a year ago. I just can't seem to lose weight now and am piling it on at an alarming rate.

Let me guess, when you’ve dieted before, you ate less than a child needs and deprived yourself of anything you enjoyed? This is where so many people go wrong. Calorie counting absolutely works, but you need to change your mind at.
set small goals eg lose 1 stone. Goal weight in lbs (losing 1 stone) x 12 = daily calories. I’ll bet you were eating way less than that and could sustain it.

I do think this helps 2kg doesn’t seem much on the scales but can easily take a month - whereas 4.5lbs seems more substantial!!

DISCLAIMER - I am on weight loss injections but i understand they are not for everyone and i'm not here to extol their virtues

I'm 2.5 stone down since November last year and I've tried to keep it at a steady rate to avoid all the crappy side effects of rapid weight loss.

Some of the things i've been able to change that you don't need the WLI's for

  • I try and log what i eat, before it goes in my mouth. That way if it is more calories than i want to eat i can really think about if i actually want it or just eating because it's there.
  • Drink water before every meal, personally my habit of afternoon snacking was mostly due to thirst rather than hunger.
  • I used to save the best bit of the meal to last, and it meant that i was eating even after i was full to get to that last bit. it really surprised me how much i did this, it wasn't until i was unable to finish meals and i realised how often i had to leave my favourite foods now i try and eat the best bits first so that i can truly judge when i'm reasonably satisfied.

Mindset and ongoing motivation were my downfalls, i could get my stuff together for a month or 2, but just couldn't seem to keep it up, I was losing and gaining the same half a stone and to be honest it was really getting me down.

I've lost two stone since January without any drugs, just through tracking food on an app. I've also upped my exercise, which doesn't really help with weight loss but does make me feel better (and is easier to do as I get lighter). I've had periods off, when I've been on holiday, and have been relatively good about getting back on the diet after each holiday. I think the main reason why I've stuck at it (and why I'm reasonably sure I'll continue until I lose the third stone that also needs to go) is that I've looked at my motivation for wanting to lose weight and get generally healthier/fitter, and have found ways of reminding myself of this when I waver.

Controversial, but I lost several stones eating one meal a day. It’s was the only thing that worked for me and I think it quietened my food noise similar to what I hear the drugs described as doing. I eat a very healthy meal once a day and I am a bit more flexible during weekends and holidays now I have lost the weight. I feel the healthiest I have ever been. Plenty of energy and never sick. I don’t think it would work for everyone though.

Its not so much that its controversial, just that it simply wouldnt work for many of us. Unless I am on WLI, I feel dizzy and get headaches and my brain doesnt work properly if I skip meals. Something in the WLI evens out my blood sugar so I seem to be able to do it in that instance.

Can I ask why you don’t wish the drugs if you have never succeeded before, like most people, to get it off and keep it off.

I don't know about OP's reasons but I want to do it without drugs so I don't have to pay for them! I don't have space in my budget. It is possible that I could pay for them for a while but I'm worried that I'd have to keep taking them to keep the weight off.

I don't have a problem with the principle of them, they are hugely helpful for some people and although there are risks there are also risks from carrying excess weight. I believe MJ is also not suitable if you are on the pill.

I was away from Friday to Monday. I was out last night. I didn’t fast and I wasn’t careful. I ate what I wanted.

I’m out again Wednesday and Thursday this week, for lunch. So I’m fasting today and will fast on Friday. Just need to switch the mindset and not think, oh no, it’s gone wrong and fall off the wagon.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 20/10/2026 15:37

I’ve lost 7 stone since 2019.

Eat in an 8 hour window. Calorie count. Work out TDEE and eat under it. Move more.
