So, can anyone, in layman's terms, talk me through the complexity that is the Low GI diet

SheikYerbouti · 29/06/2008 20:20

I am fat.

I no longer want to be fat

I have decided that Low GI might be a good plan, as seems eminently sensible, and will also give me energy (good because most of my days are 4.30am-11pm or later, due to work commitments)

However, it seem such a faff. I need it simplified. I need to be told what I can and can't eat. How will I know if something is low GI?

Grrrrr

Hello
Well, I am doing India and Neris's idiot proof diet which is a bit like Atkins from what I gather (although have never done Atkins). I have lost 1 stone 4lbs since 5th May and am never hungry. It's low GI, it's COMPLETE instructions, no faff and it's working for me. Here's the sort of stuff I eat:

Bacon and eggs
sausages (with high pork content and low rusk content)
cheese, all kinds
salami, chorizo
prawns, fish of all kinds, dipped in garlic mayo (without sugar)
spinanch, green beans, cucumber, broccoli, any leafy green vegetables
chicken, beef, any meat (mostly organic)
double cream
butter
lots of vitamins
lots of water

What I don't eat:
fruit
carby veg (so no carrots or peas)
anything processed
sugar
potatoes
bread
pasta
rice

Me and Suzywong are doing it on my 10yy thread if you're interested.

WideWebWitch · 29/06/2008 20:39

And whilst I appreciate this diet isn't for everyone, it's working for me and:

I know I can stick to it because I am eating food I like
I am never hungry
It doesn't feel like a diet, just the way I eat

Piffle · 29/06/2008 20:39

tip one...
tis not a diet
tis a lifestyle change
more energy
and if you are overweight it will help you lose weight!
what sort of meals do you eat now?

But essentially low gi refers to glycaemic index of each food, this in turn relates to how your body metabolises the foods. High gi too fast. Low gi releases energy slowly, keeping you fuller for longer.

Do some archive searching I rate Anthony worral thompsons gi cookbook BUT I am a big foodie

Do you like to cook?

WideWebWitch · 29/06/2008 20:40

And there are lots of used copies on Amazon very cheaply. There's also a crackingly good forum for ideas and checking what you are and aren't allowed to eat, pig2twig

WideWebWitch · 29/06/2008 20:40

I am big foodie too which makes this diet v good for me.

SheikYerbouti · 29/06/2008 20:49

I eat proper meals, but the snacking and lager lets me down big time.

We eat a lot of veg and fruit and lean meat.

BUT I eat too much chocolate and I drink like a fish

Have ordered the book, I will give it a go!

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 29/06/2008 20:53

You must order the vitamins if you're going to do it, you must read the book and shop in preparation and you must do the first 2 weeks hardcore. It's honestly worth it, imo and e.

WideWebWitch · 29/06/2008 20:53

10yy thread if you're tempted, no obligation, obv!

SheikYerbouti · 29/06/2008 20:56

gi is the best eating plan as far as i can see. it uses foods that release energy slowly therefore keep you satisfied for longer.

these foods are naturally high in nutrients so it is very good for you. it is a life-long plan really.

i've seen gi ratings on some food in supermarkets such as m&s and tesco which just shows its popularity.

found a good link here

my mum started to follow it a couple of years ago, she is a granny (albeit one in her early forties) and the slimmest she's ever been.

she is very healthy, never hungry and is a size 8. if i only i could get my arse off this couch and follow suit...

Piffle · 29/06/2008 21:43

sheik
i dropped 3 kgs in 5 weeks quitting my 3 cans most days lager habit.
and I'm not overweight...
no brainer!!!!

Lizzer · 29/06/2008 21:50

Ouch Ouch Ouch, ok SheikYerbouti, one of my fave mn names btw (if I can get away with being so crawly-crawly-suck-suck in these circs )

I'm going to do it ..will order book right now..hoping it is as witty as promised. If not then I require mn mirth to get through this...

Sorry for general air of despondency..moving onwards and upwards...

WideWebWitch · 29/06/2008 22:25

Lizzer, blimey, your ds is six months already? Wow! It seems like 2 minutes ago you announced you were pregnant.

Sheik, the lager has to go tbh. Let me know what you think of the book, it spoke to me big time.

fishie · 29/06/2008 22:31

sheik you are NOT ALL THAT fat you know. just fatter than you'd prefer.

i have read that idiot book and the motivating bit of it is great but the actual diet bit is (sorry www and others) rubbish.

low / high gi is also a bit gimmicky imo.

i have lost weight (10kg) by
giving up cheese
drinking 1/3rd less
eating more fruit and veg

one year on i have maintained this by
drinking more
running 12k a week

so it is all manageable. i don't even miss cheese now.

WideWebWitch · 29/06/2008 22:42

fishie, if it works for some people it's not 'rubbish' - it's just not for them. I acknowledged that it's not for everyone, absolutely. It either suits you or it doesn't. Doesn't make it rubbish!

Piffle · 30/06/2008 07:12

low gi is not gimmicky either actually
if you view it as a diet alone it is not suitable as it requires a sea change in habits
it is used to control diabetes and heart disease so hardly gimmicky...

SheikYerbouti · 30/06/2008 14:53

Having my jaw wired is the only option, I'm sure

The day started well. But I have just had 2 mini feast ice creams

They were just there and so FEASTY.

Anyway, Have been to work this morning, where I have to be among stick thin beautiful 20 year olds. I get round this normally by being jolly. I don;t want to be the jolly fat one, I want to remove my belly saggage and look more like I used tyo pre childtren

I used to turn heads you know.

Now I just turn milk.

Oh well.

OP posts:
SheikYerbouti · 30/06/2008 14:54

And I have A LOT more than 10kg to lose, sadly.

OP posts:
Piffle · 30/06/2008 14:59

if it is there I eat it
therefore I take steps to ensure it is not there
buy kids icecreams that I hate.
buy plain biscuits
never buy booze
remember
sweety pickers have bigger knickers

SheikYerbouti · 30/06/2008 15:04

My knickers are hammocks.

I wish I could wake up tomorrow a size 8 (what I should be ideally)

I need abou 6 months clear of any socialising si that I can emerge the other end phoenix-like. However, I am not going to give it up, soi I shall have to find a way round it. I am planning to start going swimming again. I will be there 630 tomorrow morning (depending on what time I finish work tonight - have a BIG deadline)

OP posts:
Piffle · 30/06/2008 15:09
