Does anyone else try and make sure most things they eat are high in protein, low calories and low carbs.?

Yes, I try to lead with the protein and go from there.

What's your objective eating this way @Rainydays26?

I'm mainly high fat, medium protein and low carb. I don't worry about the calories.

Pansykavalier · 02/07/2026 19:48

Absolutely.
plus intermittent fasting.
no snacks except fruit or maybe a boiled egg if I’m peckish
little or no alcohol - don’t drink calories

Yes and fibre. I cleaned my diet up when I was trying to get my under active thyroid under control. It helped me lose weight and I feel a lot better

Kind of but I have to because I’m diabetic and have lost lots of weight I can’t afford to regain. My food spec priority order is:

  • high protein
  • high fibre
  • moderate fat
  • low carb
  • low calorie

if it hits the top four then I’m not too concerned about the calorie count because it tends to work itself out by being so filling I eat less in general so the days calorie count stays reasonable.

I make sure that I get enough protein and carbs to fuel my workouts.

Nothing tastes as good as strong feels!

Are you very slim?

Pansykavalier · 02/07/2026 21:58

My BMI is about 23.5 but I’m currently carrying around 6-8 extra pounds, so trying to get back to my ‘normal’. Low carb/high protein plus IF usually works. I also exercise for 45-60 minutes at least five times a week week, plus walking.

Problem is I’ve read too much protein is hard on the kidneys?

You’d have to be eating a lot of protein or already have kidney problems for this to be an issue

”In healthy individuals, the kidneys are highly adaptable. While metabolizing large amounts of protein briefly increases your Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR)—a measure of kidney activity—this is a normal physiological adaptation, not kidney damage. The standard recommended daily allowance is 0.8 g per kg, but highly active individuals can safely consume between 1.2 g and 2.0 g per kg daily without harming healthy kidney function”

I typically eat around 100g protein a day and I have kidney function blood tests at least once a year as part of my annual diabetes testing and my kidney function is bang in the middle of the normal range.

We do excrete out any extra protein so I’d guess if you’re over doing it to the extreme then yes it possibly would effect your kidneys?
