Has anyone switched to meal replacement shakes for weight loss?

So after months, well actually 2yrs on and off, of tediously counting my calories and not losing a thing and in fact still gaining weight somehow. I have decided to start shakes, I no longer have to weigh my food, search for my food to log and find healthy alternatives to everything and still stress out when I get on the scales and still havnt lost anything. It hasnt been a full week on the shakes and I finally have lost some weight. 1.5kg. Is there anyone else who is struggling with weight loss and turned to shakes? My weight gain started when I hit perimenopaus and it became out of control and to this point I have gained 30kg, starting at 60kg. 1200 calories a day still isnt working or getting the weight off and i have become frustrated, unhappy, stressed with all the work involved. So have decided to do the intense weight loss program that optifast offers with their shakes and things. I have also added in more excises and even a brisk walk around our local lake.

@OddBootsyes I am really watching what I eat with the shakes and making sure my protein grams are high but I’m keeping my carbs low ish. I’ve also upped my water intake and my exercise massively. My hope is that when I get to my target weight I will drop the lunch shake and just keep the breakfast one which I will probably change to a huel type drink. I hadn’t realised how little protein I was really eating before. I feel so much better and fuller and my sweet tooth has reduced dramatically. I’m hopefully in for the long haul with regard to changing my eating and exercise patterns.

@TellHerToFuckOffim well aware that’s it’s an MLM but I’m not involved or recruiting anyone just using their products which works for me.

That’s just like saying you’re not involved in drug cartels who destroy people’s lives, you only use their products 😂 Have you actually looked into the company?

ApricotRow · 18/05/2026 09:37

@TellHerToFuckOffwhy are you on this thread?

ApricotRow · 18/05/2026 09:38

@TellHerToFuckOffno I’ve not looked into it. I am aware that all MLMs are big scams. Do you say the same to people using Avon products or buying scentsy wax melts?

Chocolattcoffeecup · 18/05/2026 10:27

I know someone who likes slim fast shakes. I haven't tried them but I recently started Huel not solely for weight loss. It's a combination of not having much time for breakfast some days at work and therefore wanting something other than a croissant and coffee but the calories are probably the same. If you switched dinner or lunch for a shake then it may be more beneficial but for me it needs to taste ok.

Well funny enough, I’m interested in meal replacement shakes! I have another half stone to lose and considering it as an option.

I’d suggest you look into it before you spend any more of your hard earned money, they’re not your standard scammy MLM… hence why there’s a Netflix documentary about them. It’s just a piece of advice for those who are guided by their moral compass and want to choose to spend their pounds with more reputable companies, of which there are 100s.

You can choose to take the advice or ignore it, but there’s no need to get rude or defensive.

xanthomelana · 18/05/2026 10:42

I’ve done it in the past. The best one I did was the Cambridge diet but it’s hard and you’ll inevitably put the weight back on. Steer clear of any MLM ones, expensive for what they are and you can get cheaper if you shop around plus no nagging hun bots trying to recruit you.

BadSkiingMum · 18/05/2026 18:21

I was tempted by Huel for lunch but they are 400 calories and I can make a 400 calorie lunch very easily.

I will try out the Slimfast protein or the Habitual, thanks for the recommendation upthread.

I don't think you should do that if not eating along side it as you won't be getting all your nutrients and vitamins you need the actual meal replacement shakes

I think that’s a fair point and is probably only good for the odd meal replacement or snack replacement rather than a long term full meal replacement diet.

I find im struggling a little bit on the shakes. Im one to not even drink thickshakes or anything like that so drinking shakes is a bit sensory for me so I have not kept it going day after day. So decided to only do 2 shakes a day and eat dinner and try to keep on that trend . Im going through the part of perimenopaus that the sugar cravings are really kicking in, iv started on some supplements and iron tablets and see if over time this will curb it. Also I bought some facebook patches hahah they had great reviews . I bought one for mood and onw for weight loss as it claims, has something in it to stop cravings and feeling hungry and boost metabolism. So far I feel happier but struggling with the sugar cravings. Iv never had sugar cravings before so not sure how to manage them. Any pointers would be great.

I’ve actually found that my sugar cravings have disappeared this is my big problem too. I have been able to just treat myself to a square of dairy milk which is unheard of me. I think you need to go cold turkey on sugar for a few weeks for it to kick in.

I think your right, but the initial no eating it is a struggle. I get mad, frustrated, I dont want to eat or i eat too much , I then start drinking more coffee. Stopping sugar and also cutting caffeine is really overwhelming right now. I cant seem to do both but both are making weight loss hard and also im trying for another baby via ivf and its no good for ttc . Im a big jumble of mess and just trying to get my health together without actually absolutely losing my mind or going through the major side effect so been weaning.

What about fruit @Miraclemuma03? Something easy you can snack on that would give that little sugar hit, grapes, blueberries, oranges?

Could you cut to black decaf coffee? I gave up caffeine a number of years ago and found that herbal teas fill the gap.

Yes been weaning with more fruit but just not enough. I also think eating the sugar has become a comfort thing and become a habit thats hard to kick. With the coffee iv cut to 3 a day and standing pretty firm on that so far. Im definitely no tea drinker, and not a fan of decaf . I really only have just that last coffee of the day to cut and im pretty much on target. But cant say the same about the sugar. I have actually taken everything out of the house that I would use to snack on, but still not stopping me from running Into coles when I need a couple things and bringing home some bickies of some sort ..

I’ve been doing slim fast on and off since last summer. Lost around 1.5 stone however I’ve had weeks not doing it such as Xmas and if I’ve been poorly (when I have a cold I want to eat everything in sight). I only have another 4lb or so to loose. Only chose slim fast as easy to get and cheap. My issue is planning I don’t want to plan 3 meals a day. A colleague has done it though and struggled as she’s wanted actual meals so it’s whatever works for you. I find it easy to just plan 7 evening meals for the week and have shakes.

I started the shakes because I got sick of sorting food and counting calories and not losing weight. I ended up giving up and gained more weight. Thought if I went on the shakes my meals are sorted and I can just pick up some fruit or veg as a snack in between but even this seems to be In the too hard basket. Its been a long journey with no end in sight at this stage.

I couldn’t not eat all day. The good thing about Herbalife is that you eat two snacks in the day plus a proper evening meal. I thought I had sugar cravings but think it was actually just habit. I do have to cut things out altogether though because once I start I know I won’t stop.

houseofcake · 19/05/2026 20:24

Anyone tried Nutriseed juice cleanse? i keep being advertised it and now tempted. I have about a stone too loose and need a kick start! menopause weight gain rather than lack of excercise or diet (although portion size maybe needs to change as metabolism slows down!)
